Gerald Christian, a 6-3 and 240-pound tight end/defensive end at the high school level and projects at tight end at the collegiate level. The No. 1 ranked player in the state of Florida has been safety Matt Elam but make no mistake about it, Christian could have as much upside as Elam at the next level.
It was very important for the Gators to pursue Christian the way they did with immediate playing time available at the tight end position.
It was the Florida offense and the way they used the tight end (Aaron Hernandez) that made the Gators attractive to Christian and his family. He glowed when thinking about the different scenarios in which the Gator tight ends gets the ball. Currently ranked four-stars by Scout.Com and the nation's No. 4 ranked tight end, Christian is a huge addition to what should be arguably the nation's top class on National Signing Day.
Often times players get overshadowed by other great players (Matt Elam) and that is certainly the case in this scenario. People close to the situation or that have seen Dwyer in person are fully aware of how explosive Christian can be with his size, speed and athletic ability. Gerald Christian will take his official visit to Florida this weekend as the Gators host Florida State.
Scout.com Take Chad Simmons:
Christian is an elite athlete at his size. He has great body control for someone pushing 6-4 and 240 pounds. He can make adjustments on balls and he looks natural when running in the open field. For his size, he is not the blocker expected, but that will come in time. He just needs to work on his technique off the tackle and he will be a total package tight end. His combination of hands, size, and athleticism make him elite. Christian has so much potential at Florida and Urban Meyer will be able to use him in so many different ways once he gets to Gainesville. He will be able to block, get down field, be a weapon in the flats, and really create mismatches. While he is a big blocker being used a lot at fullback now at Dwyer, look for him to really excel as a pass catching tight end in the future.
