Donovan, Gators Look For 8-0

Only two Gator Basketball Teams have ever opened the season with eight or more consecutive wins. This year's Gators try to become the third when they ride over to Jacksonville for a Friday night game with the JU Dolphins. JU has lost all four of its games this season, but have played all of them away from home against tough competition including South Carolina and FSU.

The Gators are coming off perhaps their worst performance of the young season in an 80-59 win over FAMU. Florida shot out to an early 14 point lead, but got really sloppy and let the Rattlers close to four points at halftime. Another surge made it a 23-point lead with 12 minutes to go ands the Gators coasted the rest of the way.

Florida Coach Billy Donovan is particularly concerned about the 20 turnovers his team committed against FAMU. He says the Gators have too many turnovers and too few assists after seven games. Donovan also talks about the shooting woes behind the arc for Kenny Boynton (8-46) and Erving Walker (10-39).

Donovan on turnovers, assists:

"It's really something I'm disappointed in because when you look at our two forwards in Chandler (Parsons) and Dan (Werner), both are highly skilled guys who can handle and pass the ball. Dan has 15 assists and 15 turnovers on the year, which is uncharacteristic of him and Chandler has 10 assists and 14 turnovers. Outside of Erving Walker (36/15) and Kenny Boynton (22/15) I don't think there's another player on our team with a positive assist/turnover ratio. We should be a better passing team. A lot of it is careless. A lot of it is guys trying to make plays on the fast break that aren't there. We've got to clean that up right now because our press, I think has gotten better. But we're exerting all this effort on the defensive end of the floor and then we're giving it right back."

Donovan on shooting woes:

"The one thing I love about both of those two guys is that they still defend. I've seen a lot of young guys players when their offense is not going real well what the end up doing is not playing at the other end of the floor. Kenny has been one of our best perimeter defenders. He's a reliable guy who can really lock people down. My biggest thing with him is getting him to a point where he's taking high percentage shots. I don't want him over thinking. His shots will drop and fall. They fell in the exhibition and I'm confident they'll fall going forward."

Donovan on playing Jacksonville:

"I think the first thing that stands out, like FAMU is their schedule. They've played all road games and I think we're the only home game on their schedule before they go into their league play. This will I think be a very exciting game for them. They played South Carolina really well and lost by four points, 97-93. They've had some games where they've played against good opponents and competition. They're a good team. They have a great player in (Ben) Smith (16.0) in the back court. They have (Lehmon) Colbert (8.5/4.3) returning and (Ayron) Hardy (6.0/5.8). They've got a lot of very good players who have a level of experience. We played them last year in the NIT and it was their last game of the year. This is their first home game so I'm sure there'll be a lot of excitement."
