Higdon's Take: Matt Elam

The recruitment of the state's top player has more ups and downs than a roller coaster at Six Flags, or does it? Matt Elam from Palm Beach Gardens (FL) William T. Dwyer has always known he wanted to be a Gator. When did he actually know he would be a Florida Gator?

"When I got the offer," Matt Elam said back in October.

A timeline of sorts on Elam might have Gator fans on the edge of their seats until early January. In October of 2008 Matt Elam decided to commit to the University of Florida. A year later after taking a trip to West Virginia with current teammate Robert Clark, Elam told the Palm Beach Post if signing day were today he might not end up with the Gators.

"Probably West Virginia," he said. "It's crazy, huh? That's how it is."

At one point Elam had a long conversation with Urban Meyer to assure him that he was solid and done with the recruiting process and then soon after that Elam appeared to open things back up once again.

All the while Eddie Gran and the Tennessee Volunteers were working Matt Elam over pretty good explaining to him how he could come in and be the next Eric Berry. Then in a very ironic twist of fate Gran leaves Tennessee and takes a job with Florida State. Now Elam was quoted as saying that he would like to maybe play with linebacker Jeff Luc because Luc is a great player and they could do good things together. I wonder how hard the Florida State coaches are beating Elam up on the fact that he can come in and start? Sounds like what Tennessee and Gran used on Nu'keese Richardson last season.

The Florida coaches will make an in-home visit with the state's top player today. I am sure that they will come out of there and know after looking Elam in the eye's what his intentions are moving forward. He is scheduled to take his official visit this weekend as is teammate Robert Clark. Elam is on track to enroll early and the clock is ticking. There is a long lasting relationship and great deal of respect between Urban Meyer and the Elam family, especially Elam's mother. Make no mistake about it she loves Urban Meyer to death and Elam has told me many times. She might be leaned on heavily tonight to truly be able to identify with what if anything is going on.

Is there cause for concern with Matt Elam and the Florida Gators? I think at this point it's safe to say that only Matt Elam can answer that question and unfortunately we might not know until the first week in January. He has been committed to the Florida Gators and Urban Meyer for a long time and I still think he honor's his original decision but it hasn't been without concern from all involved.
