A Fitting End to an Unusual Season

I know most of you felt that the only appropriate end for the remarkable career of Tim Tebow was for the Gator QB to walk off the field after completing a perfect 14-0 season. Well that was not in the cards after Florida lost to Alabama in the SEC Title Game a few weeks ago. Still, the Gators did the next best thing.

The Gators ended the season and Tim Tebow's career with a dominating win over Cincinnati in the Sugar Bowl. Florida scored on its first five possessions in the Superdome in New Orleans and would have made it six if not for a missed field goal.

The Gators did whatever they wanted to do offensively, including the surprising acknowledgment of the existence of Deonte Thompson in the receiving corps. Florida never met any resistance from the Cincinnati defense in posting Sugar Bowl and BCS records for his performance.

Sure, I would have liked to see John Brantley get the playing time on the scoring drive that made it 51-10, but they didn't ask me, Florida instead decided to make this game a remarkable testimony to one of the greatest careers in college football history.

Normally I write about the key moments in a game, but tonight the key moment was the national anthem. Once the song was out of the way Florida's destruction of the Bearcats was underway and completely unstoppable.

Tebow ran (51) and passed (482) his way to more than 500 yards in the Gators' domination of the nation's No. 3 team. It was perhaps his finest performance in Orange and Blue and that says something. Tebow could not have been sharper on the turf in New Orleans and left the field with NFL scouts questioning themselves about the iffy grades they've been giving him.

But the bottom line is that the Gators overcame the disappointing loss to Alabama AND the coaching turmoil to put together a superb performance to end the season. The Gator seniors will leave with 48 wins and can claim to be the only team in the BCS era to win 13 games two straight years and three times in four years.

Florida's future is in a state of flux going forward, but base don't this performance I'd have to say the future looks pretty flux-ing good.
