Halapio will Appeal for Redshirt

It's no secret that the University of Florida has a stable of offensive linemen that are just waiting to get on the field. Jon Halapio got an early chance this year to play as a true freshman only to have it end with an injury midway through the season. The injury will likely allow him to redshirt and still have four years to play. He plans on being even more prepared to get on the field in 2010.

Jon Halapio was touted as the most physically ready offensive lineman to come into the class of 2009 Gator offensive line recruits. A class of five linemen, Halapio was able to get on the field in the first game of the season as a guard.

With his freshman year down, Halapio looks to make himself a lot better in the off season.

"In the spring I am going to work my hardest and I plan on getting bigger, stronger, and faster," Halapio said moments after the Gators manhandled Cincinnati in the Sugar Bowl. "I already have the plays down, I just have to work on my technique. Just give me a little more time and I am sure I will get some playing time."

Halapio hurt his shoulder in the middle of the year and the injury should allow him to redshirt for the 2009 season. It is an appeals process, but Halapio seems to meet all the requirements to meet the appeal.

"I am redshirting for this season," he said about his injury. "I did it in the middle of the season, I hurt my shoulder and it just wouldn't get right. It's getting better and it will be fine in the spring."

The offensive line and the Gator Nation are waiting around for two major players to decide if they are moving on to the professional ranks or not. Michael Pouncey and Maurkice Pouncey are weighing their options for the NFL and may move on as juniors. With or without them, Halapio believes the offensive line will be something major to deal with next year.

"We still have coach Addazio and he is the best in the country," Halapio said of offensive line coach, offensive coordinator, and interim head coach Steve Addazio. "I am sure we will be great with out (Pounceys). With them it will be a plus and it's a win-win situation."

Halapio is also certain that the Gators will return to glory in 2010. He believes in the guy that will run the offense.

"John Brantley, that is all I have to say, Halapio said of the Gators' soon to be junior quarterback. "He has the arm. We are very confident in him and like him a lot."
