Baseball Cruises Past Florida A&M 17-2

The University of Florida baseball team took advantage of three Florida A&M errors in the first inning, scoring six runs to put the game out of reach as the Gators cruised to a 17-2 victory over the Rattlers Wednesday night at McKethan Stadium.

Florida also rode the starting pitching of Mike Pete who controlled the game on the mound for Florida as he picked up his first win of the season. Pete went six innings and gave up five hits, one run with two strikeouts and no walks. He used 68 pitches to coax Florida batters into eight fly outs and six groundouts. Three Florida pitchers closed out the game each throwing an inning as the Gator pitchers held Florida A&M to eight hits.

Brett Dowdy started the first with a double and scored two batter's later on a Ben Harrison RBI single. Jonathan Tucker reached on an error and C.J. Smith and John Paul Castro both walked to load the bases. The big blow came with two outs as a Justin Tordi pop-up was dropped for a three base error clearing the bases. In the next at bat, Jeff Corsaletti was hit by a pitch putting runners at the corners. A Matt Cresap two RBI double wrapped up scoring in the inning and gave the Gators a lead they would not relinquish.

Back-to-back home runs in the second extended the Gator lead. Smith drilled a two-run homer over the outfield grandstands and then Mario Garza homered in the next at bat to extend the lead to 9-0.

The Gator offense went back to work in the fourth pushing five runs across. Six consecutive batters reached base off two walks and four singles. Castro and Jeff Corsaletti each drove in a pair with base hits into center field.

The Rattlers scored single runs in each the sixth and seventh innings to douse the shutout. Chris Branning knocked in the first FAMU run with a single and Alcides Segui had an RBI groundout to score the second run.

In the sixth, the Gators added another run to their 14-1 lead. Fritz Reichardt singled to left center field for his first hit of the season. On the next at bat, Joe Mercadante reached after being hit by a pitch. A Dowdy RBI single then scored Reichardt.

Florida then loaded the bases again with two outs in the eighth. A Riordan RBI single scored Graziano and Reichart to close out the 15 run win.

Both Dowdy and Garza had two hits while Smith scored three times for Florida.
