Locksley joins Florida after serving in the same capacity at the University of Maryland where he spent the last six seasons, which marked the longest continuous tenure of any member of the Terps current coaching staff.
Prior to Maryland, Locksley also coached at Army (1996), Pacific (1995), U.S. Naval Academy Prep School (1993-94) and Towson (1992). Locksley got his start at his alma mater after he was a three-year starter in the defensive backfield at Towson from 1988-91.
"Mike is a great addition to our coaching staff," Zook said. "He is very organized, is a high-energy recruiter, and is a great family man. Mike has a proven track record coaching football and recruiting and we think he is a perfect fit to our Gator family."
Running Backs Coach Larry Fedora will now coach the perimeter offensive game, which includes the outside wide receivers, while Dwayne Dixon has been named Assistant Head Coach and will coach the inside receivers. Defensive Backs Coach Mike Woodford will also coordinate the Gator special teams efforts. Joe Wickline will become the Running Game Coordinator.
While in College Park, Locksley played a key role in the turnaround of Maryland's running game. In 2002, Maryland ranked second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in rushing offense behind an average of 202.9 yards per game, and led the league in the department in 1999 (234.1) after finishing ninth in the category during the 1997 season. Locksley's recruiting efforts have also been instrumental in coordinating improved signing classes for Maryland. After helping maintain the strength of Ralph Friedgen's first recruiting class in 2001, Locksley helped UM engineer a 2003 class, which was ranked among the nation's top 15 by some analysts.
Born on Christmas day in 1969, Locksley, 33, and his wife, Kia, have three sons; Mike Jr., Meiko and Kai, and a daughter, Kori.
