Calipari has 'Nothing' in His Head

Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari has done a remarkable job in his first season in Lexington. Calipari brought in one of the best recruiting classes anyone has ever seen and is on the verge of an SEC Championship and NCAA No. 1 seed. Still he has to be regretting an idiotic comment he made on Friday.

The Kentucky coach was asked what the possibility of clinching the SEC Title this weekend meant to him and he responded, "nothing". Calipari says his only concern is just how high up the pecking order his team will be when the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee makes its assignments.

"I've always taken the approach that it's about the seed in the NCAA tournament," Calipari said. "If you want me to be honest about how I think and what we're doing to prepare, that's what it is. The SEC tournament is about our seed in the NCAA tournament."

Apparently he's not aware of what his own people think about being the top program in the SEC. Perhaps his overwhelming dominance of Conference USA while at Memphis minimized the significance of winning a league title. Either way, the folks in Lexington are bound to make it clear to their coach that winning the SEC is job one for the man who rules at Rupp Arena.

Calipari has plenty of time to think about his comment since the Wildcats lost to Tennessee on Saturday postponing any championship celebration. His team will play Georgia in Athens on Wednesday before hosting the Gators in the regular season finale' on Sunday.

The loss to Tennessee shouldn't be fatal to Kentucky's bid for a No. 1 seed, but it adds importance to the week ahead and might force the Wildcats to do some damage in the SEC Tournament.
