Selection Committee Lives up to its Word

A year ago SEC Commissioner Mike Slive made it clear that conference schools needed to toughen their schedules in order to earn the respect of the NCAA Selection Committee. Some schools responded and none more so than Florida Gator coach Billy Donovan.

The Gator head man lobbied for the game with Syracuse in the SEC/Big East Challenge and demanded a shot at Michigan State in Atlantic City. Florida split those games and its obvious taking on that challenge was the difference when the NCAA Tournament selections were made.

Florida earning a No. 10 seed was a bit of a surprise --- okay, more than a bit, and it probably gave hope to Mississippi State for a few moments. The Gators had five top-50 RPI wins and that was a big deal. Mississippi State had just one and that was the bottom line.

We'll have plenty of time to get into the match ups and the possibilities, but the bottom line is this. While many were all over this team down the stretch, the people who defended them in keeping an eye on the big picture were proven correct. There will be no NIT for the Gators this year. Considering the returning talent, looking at the signees for next year and commitments for the following year, there will be no NIT in the Gators immediate future.

Florida has ended the spiral that sent them to consecutive NIT appearances, and no matter how you feel about this player or that issue it's something Gator Nation should celebrate.
