Audio: Meyer Speaks on the Spring

Urban Meyer spoke to the media for the first time since the opening day of spring practice more than two weeks ago. The topics of conversation were all over the place given his absence in front of the microphones for that long. We have the audio here for you to enjoy.

One major topic of conversation for Florida head coach Urban Meyer was Carl Moore. Moore returned to practice on Friday after missing two and storming off the field Saturday. Meyer brushed it off as personal reasons.

Meyer is not liking what is going on with his team right now because of all the injuries, however he is seeing lots of development of young players. He would like to get the healthy older guys out of the spring game on April 10, but they can't because of the injuries.

Meyer said the team lacks an identity on offense, but that junior quarterback John Brantley is having a pretty good spring.

Meyer talked about junior running back Jeff Demps as the "fastest man in the world". Demps has been with the track team all spring and not playing football. He ran the fastest 100-meter race in the world on Friday just yards from the practice field at UF's track stadium. Demps clocked in at 10.11 in the 100 meters.

Meyer mentioned that junior athlete Chris Rainey is struggling a little bit but not healthy with a hamstring issue of his own.

Meyer said there is no certainty on defense, because of health on the line. The linebackers are doing great and they have some depth there. They need a field corner still an he proceeded to list off every corner left on the roster outside of Janoris Jenkins, who will start at the boundary corner. "(Freshman safety) Matt Elam will play...he is a hell of a player," Meyer said.

He expects all of the freshmen defensive linemen to play after the rest get here in the fall.

Meyer said that senior defensive end Justin Trattou and senior center Mike Pouncey are the team captains right now.

He talked about meeting with Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski about the legendary coach's time off to deal with health problems a few years back. The biggest thing Meyer learned was that Krzyzewski surrounded himself with a group of people he really trusts.

Two players that Meyer singled out as having good to surprising springs were freshman tight end Jordan Reed and freshman safety Matt Elam.

You can hear for yourself in Meyer's own words right here.
