Softball Team Takes SEC Lead

The Gator softball team took a big step towards defending its SEC Championship Sunday afternoon. Florida downed LSU 7-1 to finish off a three-game sweep of the Tigers who arrived in Gainesville a perfect 8-0 in SEC play.

Florida used a four-run sixth inning to break open a 3-1 ballgame and then held LSU scoreless in the seventh inning to claim their third straight win over the team from Baton Rouge. One was the loneliest number for LSU as the Tigers scored just one run in each of their losses (4-1, 2-1) Saturday and then again managed a single tally in the series finale.

Brittany Schutte, a freshman catcher from California gave Florida a 3-0 lead in the third inning with her ninth homer of the season, a two run shot to right field. Another California rookie, pitcher Ensley Gammel (7-0) picked up with win in the circle with four innings of relief pitching without allowing an earned run. Florida also got offensive support from junior second baseman Aja Paculba who went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.

Florida improves to 27-4, 9-2 in the SEC and now have the best record in the SEC. Coach Tim Walton's team will head to Arkansas for a three-game set next weekend. The Gators are now 160-14 over the last two and a half seasons and have won 62-of-66 SEC games in that time.
