Can't Have it Both Ways

Recruiting is like running with a glass of water in your hand, the water is all over the place and continues to do so until you reach your destination. The goal is not to spill any of the water but it is unavoidable at times. The only thing you can count on in recruiting is the destination, National Signing Day.

What happens prior to NSD is a roller coaster ride of emotions for coaches, recruits, moms, dads and fans from all walks of life. Fans make college football what it is today, one of the greatest sports on the planet.

However, before we can understand the fan we must look at what a "fan" is. Fan or fanatic is a person marked or motivated by an extreme, unreasoning enthusiasm, as for a cause. Enthusiasm that extends beyond normal limits of everyday life.

Recently, both Pop Saunders and Jeoffrey Pagan or someone close to them have mentioned they will take visits. I always find it interesting when committed players of teams say they will take "trips." I received numerous messages this last week from Gator fans with one common theme, how on earth could we lose both Pop Saunders and Jeoffrey Pagan?

It's something we talk about all the time, recruiting is not a stable business or hobby and has more up's and down's than the stock market. Recruiting is a "trendy" business and not month to month but on a daily basis it has the ability to change and often times does.

The point is simple, when prospects are committed to the University of Florida and they talk about potential visits the majority take the sky is falling approach. When players committed to other schools talk about potential visits like HaSean Clinton-Dix (Alabama) and Cortez Davis (Florida State) the majority are of the opinion that Florida doesn't have a shot and the players in question will stick with the current teams they announced for.

Often time the recruiting fan expects and finds the negative and won't feel satisfied until bad news unfolds. If you think the sky is falling because Florida has current committed players that are talking about taking visits then at the same time shouldn't you be of the opinion Florida still has a legitimate shot at players committed to other teams that are saying they will take the same approach?

Recruiting fans can't sit squarely on top of the fence you must fall on one side or the other and you can't have it both ways.

"A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject" --Winston Churchill
