Gator Regional Win is Three-Mendous

Brian Johnson tossed seven scoreless innings and Tyler Thompson slammed three home runs to power the Florida Gators to a 15-0 win over FAU and clinch the NCAA Regional in Gainesville. The Gators advance to Super Regional play where they will host either Miami or Texas A&M.

The number three played a big role in this one. Florida wrapped up the Regional with their third straight win on the weekend. Florida scored three in the second inning, and added three in the third on three solo homers. Florida put the game away in the eighth inning on three-run homers from Preston Tucker and Thompson… his third of the night.

Florida took the lead on an RBI double by Thompson that scored Mike Zunino and added two more on a bases loaded walk to Matt den Dekker and an RBI single from Tucker.

In the second Johnson the DH helped Johnson the pitcher with a line drive over the right field fence and Zunino followed with a blast to right centerfield. One out later Thompson hit his first of the night, a tremendous blast way over the scoreboard to make it 6-0. Thompson added a solo shot to left centerfield in the fifth before the big eighth inning the put the game, and the Regional away.

Johnson (6-4) was outstanding on the mound for the Gators scattering five hits over seven innings. The freshman lefthander struck out four batters and did not walk anyone in lowering his ERA to 3.97.

Thompson's three homers were supported by three teammates who also went yard. The sophomore outfielder had just two homers all season but picked a great time to have a career game. Add in his double and he had 14 total bases in the contest and drove in six runs. Tucker ended up with four hits and four RBI while Johnson supported his pitching with three hits.

It's the second straight Super Regional for the Gators under third-year coach Kevin O'Sullivan who has guided the Gators into the NCAA Tournament all three seasons he's been in Gainesville. The Gators are now 45-15 for the season giving them three wins for every loss.

Texas A&M forced a Monday game in the Coral Gables Regional with an 11-7 win over Miami. Whoever wins that contest will play the Gators best two of three for a spot in the College World Series.

The Gators were dominant in the Regional, outscoring Bethune Cookman, Oregon State and FAU by a combined score of 32-5. In fact the Gators scored more runs in the eighth inning against FAU than the Florida pitching staff allowed in three games.
