Gators Eye Local Standout

Darius Powell, a 5-11.5, 206-pound linebacker, ended his junior season with more than 120 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles and four sacks in only seven games. It's the kind of production that has caught the eye of the top football program in America, the University of Florida.

Darius Powell, from Gainesville (FL) Eastside High School, took a trip to the University of Florida today with his father.

"It's going good," he said. "I received an offer from Bowling Green and Central Florida and Duke are about to extend written offers. I was at Florida today with my dad and they really like me. I spent time with Coach Meyer, Coach Drayton and Coach White. They talked about my size how a grew a couple inches and they want me to change position's from linebacker to safety. I am running 4.5 now but I need to continue to work on my speed."

Powell talked about his strengths as a football player.

"I have great leadership abilities and I can make tackles all over the field. I read plays well and I have great football speed. I am aggressive from the opening kickoff."

Powell will be well traveled over the summer with camp trips planned to Florida, Central Florida, Duke, Bowling Green, Louisville, Marshall and Tennessee.
