Thursday Camp Pleasant Surprises

It started out as a slow day at the Football camp at the University of Florida. Most players are young and not ready for prime time just yet. Then, late into the first session of camp, in walked star receiver Kelvin Benjamin. A closer look at the 200 quarterbacks on hand and Jerrard Randall was spotted. Then another big surprise was seeing Hunter Joyer return from a visit earlier in the week.

Probably the most noticeable thing of the day was the situation with Joyer. The big time fullback from Tampa Catholic doesn't currently have an offer from Florida. Seeing him on campus for yet another work out in less than a week certainly makes that a lot less likely scenario very soon and I would look for that offer to come. The fact that no less than five coaches worked him out, says even more. Urban Meyer, Steve Addazio, Stan Drayton, Brian White, and Dan McCarney were all over Joyer during the session. Things look to change for him shortly in regards to Florida.

Jerrard Randall was also a pleasant surprise. A week ago I would have told you that Randall would eventually be in the Florida class, but then he went and committed to Oregon. All that changed today when Randall was willing to work out at three different positions, quarterback, receiver, and cornerback. He was impressive at all three, but I love Randall's arm. I am starting to think the Gators may try to sway his decision from Oregon to play quarterback at Florida. Time will tell.

Another quarterback that impressed was 2012 Jupiter HS signal caller Tyler Cameron. Cameron has a very accurate arm and for a young guy a pretty strong arm as well. Like Randall he isn't huge, but he has a lot of good tools to work with.

The star of the day that showed up and didn't work out yet is Kelvin Benjamin. The 6-6, 220 pound receiver from Belle Glade Glades Central HS is a superstar and the ultimate in big receivers. I look forward to watching Benjamin work out later in the day and there is little doubt he is at the top of the Gator wish list at receiver.

Other stars included super 2012 receiver Latroy Pittman of Citra North Marion, near Ocala. Pittman is ripped and already close to 200 pounds and over six feet tall. He has wheels and everything you would look for in a receiver. His teammates Sean Price (tight end) and running back Jamie Gilmore were also very impressive at the camp so far. North Marion looks to have a great team today.

We should have more from camp later today.
