Florida's defensive line does not return a lot of experience, but that may work in the favor of new defensive coordinator Charlie Strong. This unit may draw it's experience and depth in numbers. Gone are Ian Scott, Clint Mitchell, Marques Oqeuendo-Johnson, Bryan Savelio, Tron Lafavor, Chris Reynolds and Arpedge Rolle. UF got a lot of mileage out of that unit last season. This year a mix of youth and veteran "potential" will give UF it's first line of defense. Let's take a look at the numbers for spring football.
Bobby McCray (Senior - Defensive End)
He had a great spring a year ago but did not get to
"freak" like numbers that many expected.
He did however come up with the biggest play of the Ron Zook era - the
block of Damon Duval's game winning field goal.
Strengths: speed off the edge, height and range. Can get into passing lanes as well as anyone in the conference.
Weakness: Needs to turn motor up and more often. Played better down the stretch and needs to handle being the "marked" man by opponents.
Darrell Lee (Senior - Defensive End)
Lee suffered a hairline fracture and missed four
games. He did register the fourth
most plays at end but never impacted like he thought he would.
Strengths: can really get to the quarterback from the edge. Another speed rusher with good range.
Weakness: offseason is important to strength and size. Also must recapture the confidence that got him off to the best start of any defensive lineman last season before his injury.
Kenny Parker (Junior - Defensive Tackle)
No one wants this kid to stay healthy more than Zook.
He has been a hard worker with a good attitude that cannot seem to
recover from back injury.
Strengths: attitude and work ethic, will start atop the depth chart.
Eric Holcombe (Junior - Defensive Tackle)
He's 6'3" 281 and a JUCO All-American against very
good competition in Mississippi. Should
replace Ian Scott inside.
Strengths: nasty attitude with a good motor. Can play both inside tackle positions.
Weakness: has not seen SEC Caliber offensive lineman on a consistent basis.
Steven Harris (Freshman - Defensive End)
Redshirted last season and added valuable size and
strength. Actually came in ready as
a freshman. May surprise some
people in the spring with his ability.
Strengths: great work ethic and plays the run real well because of his toughness.
Ray McDonald (Freshman - Defensive End)
Another young end who will get into the rotation.
Very athletic kid who has added some size.
Strengths: tough minded kid who may grow into a tackle.
Weakness: experience and Height on the edge, only listed at 6'2".
Sylvester McGrew (Sophomore - Defensive Tackle/End)
McgGew is poised for a "breakout" spring.
He may start out at tackle to compete with Parker and work in the inside
package for nickel and dime.
