Is Smith Ready to Trim List?

Four-star offensive lineman Donovan Smith of Owings Mills (Md.) High continues to go through the recruiting process, and is listing Virginia Tech in his top 12. What else is going on with the process?

Four-star offensive tackle Donovan Smith of Owings Mills (Md.) High already made an official visit to Michigan State this season, and he is considering several others.

However, at this time the 6-foot-7, 280-pound Smith seems content to take the recruiting process slowly.

Before his season began he trimmed his list to Rutgers, Virginia Tech, Connecticut, Syracuse, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Illinois, Michigan State and UCLA.

"Those are still where it stands," Owings Mills coach Steve Lurz told "He pretty much trimmed his list to the schools he had written offers from. I'm not sure when he is going to trim it again."

Lurz added Smith could trim his list in half in the next few weeks.

Smith was in East Lansing, Mich., for last week's stunning overtime win against Notre Dame. He previously told he will visit UCLA in December, but the rest of the schools remain in play.

Lurz said Virginia Tech remains an option, and Saturday Smith is scheduled to make an unofficial visit to Rutgers to watch the Scarlet Knights play North Carolina.

On the field, Smith is hoping to reserve the fortunes of the Golden Eagles on Friday when they play Pikesville High (Baltimore). Owings Mills began the season with three straight losses.

"I think the last game was his best of the year (defensively)," Lurz said. "He's playing fine on offense."
