The Big Deal

At 6-5, 340 defensive tackle Nick James really stands out in a crowd. The personable James wrapped up a strong junior season for the Bearcats of Long Beach and he is already firmly on the college recruiting radar. With schools from around the country already showing interest, James will be a name to remember as the 2012 recruiting class comes into focus.

"I feel like the season was positive," said Nick of 2010. "We worked together as a team. We got upset in the playoffs, but we had some things we should have done better.

"All in all, I feel like it was a good season."

The 2010 campaign also allowed James to show some progress he has made in endurance and ability.

"I played pretty good, but I needed to do better on my cut blocks," said Nick. "Last year I was out of shape. I was a two down player.

"This summer I worked hard and got into shape and did a lot of running. This year I stayed on the field and was a four down player."

A pair of SEC schools have extended offers, with more options expected in the near future.

"I have offers from Alabama and Ole Miss," said Nick. "I have been getting a lot of letters from Florida State, LSU, UCLA, Mississippi State and just about every school in the SEC.

"I have talked some with the D line coach at Alabama and LSU and the defensive coordinator at Tennessee."

The journey to major college football is just beginning for Nick, but he has a few ideas of what he wants in a college home.

"I am going to be looking at the area, the facilities and my coaches," said Nick. "I want to stay kind of close to home, so my dad can come and see me play."
