REGION III Regional finals
Class 5A Division I
Katy (13-0) vs. Pearland (13-0)
1 p.m. Saturday, Rice
What We thought (Katy): Basically, we thought right. The road for Katy to get to this point was a tough one as the Tigers had a Part II with North Shore. In listening to some audio from Katy coach Gary Joseph, he made the comment saying how tough it is to beat North Shore once. So for the Tigers to come out on top with in a nail biter is impressive.
What We Thought (Pearland): While we knew that Pearland was good, we did not know that Cy Creek was not going to show up at all. Pearland played a nearly flawless game from start to finish. It was 40-0 by halftime. From various reports from the scene, the Oilers starters did not play the second half and that is not surprising. But in giving credit to the Cougars, it was the longest playoff run since the 1990s.
What We Know: This game this weekend between the two Division I finalist will be a good one. While Katy has been in this place several times over the decade, the Oilers have a good history of playoff experience as well. What we know is that the area's top backs will face off in this one with Pearland's Dustin Garrison and Katy's Donovonn Young. Along with that, both have stout defenses as too. Who will come out on top?
Class 5A Division II
Cypress Woods (10-3) vs. Memorial (8-5)
1 p.m. Saturday, Tully
What We Thought (Cy Woods): Seeing what Cy Woods has done this season under the leadership of quarterback Colton Huntsman, there was no doubt that this team is good.
What We Know: Memorial is a team that will pound and grind you into the dirt with hardnosed, between the tackles running until reaching the end zone. With quarterback Wayne Taylor and Justin White carrying the ball, this Memorial team is a great team that is tough to beat. What makes the Mustangs a great team is they know who they are. In plenty of games this season, they know that speed for speed, they may not be the fastest. In that, the Mustangs will line up and run their power game until you stop them.
On the other end, with the track record of the Cy Woods team, a shoot out is not what you want. After seeing Clear Creek try to keep up with this let us know that this Cy Woods team is not just good, but great at what they do. So that is what makes this game all the more interesting. What team will set the tone in this one?
Class 4A Division I
Montgomery (12-1) vs. Friendswood (12-1)
7 p.m. Saturday, Rice
What We Thought (Montgomery): Being honest in last week's contest against Pearland Dawson, it did not seem like the Bears would even be in the regional final. Dawson had taken a late lead and appeared to be in the driver's seat. And then Montgomery running back Leroy Dobbins checked back into the game…
What We Know: This Montgomery team will play the full 48 minutes. That is for sure. On the final drive, it was Dobbins left and right, putting this Bears team on his shoulders and getting his only score of the game, which happened to be the winning touchdown. Much like we spoke about with Cy Woods in the 5A division, Friendswood is a team that can come out hard and fast and light up a scoreboard quickly. Led by quarterback Pete Maetzold, an athlete whom we feel is a Top 3 at his position in the area, the Mustangs are high-powered and loaded with playmakers. Montgomery too has a solid passing game, with Tyler Bolfing slinging the rock, but Dobbins fuels the offense.
Both teams have no trouble at all dropping 40-plus points on their opponents. Question is, who ends with the most points?
Class 4A Division II
La Marque (9-3) vs. Manvel (11-2)
2 p.m. Saturday, Angleton
What We Thought (La Marque): With the unknown about the health of La Marque running back Timothy Wright, the idea that the Cougars would be able to pull out the win over Dayton was questionable. It didn't take long to know that this La Marque team is indeed for real.
What We Know: Is the sky is the limit for the La Marque team and that the Cougars are in complete control. This week the Cougars face a team that they beat earlier in the year. But please know that this is not the same Manvel team, nor is this the same Cougar team either. La Marque quarterback Emmanuel Williams is playing good ball right now and Wright can get it done at any skilled position. For Manvel, the two-quarterback system has worked with Dexter Foreman and Travaughn Colwell both taking snaps. This game has the potential to be a great one with many storylines lines. If you choose not to drive out to the double header at Rice, I would highly suggest you head out 288 South and check out this game.
