Travis Hughes from Kempsville (Virginia Beach, VA) made his decision on December 18 2010 to spend his college years at North Carolina. According to his dad Tony Hughes, Maryland and Miami made a last minute stab at the five-star linebacker who stood out in the ESPN UnderArmour game. Both schools took a trip to his Virginia Beach home.
"Maryland and Miami have been coming after Travis really hard. Miami sent a coaching staff for an in-home visit last Thursday when Travis came back from Florida. And head coach Randy Edsall, defensive coach Don Brown and two assistant coaches met with Travis and I for an in-home visit on Saturday."
Hughes was impressed by the new Maryland coaching staff but his father says his heart is still with the Heels.
"It was pretty powerful. Randy is going to be an awesome coach for Maryland but when it comes down to it, Travis's heart is in UNC but Randy's team made a great last minute pitch. Travis is really wrapped into the coaches, fans and teammates at UNC to do any turning back now."
I was able to grab a quick comment from Travis who said the following.
"I am looking but I feel 100% about the Heels. I just want to have a backup."
