Combine Notebook: FooballU/Day

The 2nd Annual FootballU/Day Combine took place last Sunday. Two schools from South Georgia were in attendance, along with athletes from Metro-Atlanta. The weather on Sunday was overcast and swirling winds. Despite the slow conditions, athletes turned in some very impressive times and marks. On a side note, be on the look out for Brunswick High School prospects in the years to come.

Brunswick brought up a number of great athletes, rising sophomores through rising seniors. Of all of the athletes in attendance, Brunswick had seven athletes who earned Notable Performance honors. Two of Brunswick's prospects earned Co-MVP honors. Coach Victor Floyd (Brunswick head coach) has really turned that program around. It's not a mystery why they went so deep in the 4A playoffs last fall. And they accomplished the deep playoff run with a relatively young team.

In any event, the athletes were tested in the 40-yard dash, shuttle, 3-Cone, broad jump, and power ball throw. Like last year, we timed electronically for the 40-yard dash then subtracted .14 (14 one hundredths) of a second for the official times.

Below is a list of Combine Co-MVPs. These performers were selected regardless of graduation year. Below the list of Co-MVPs are other standouts (Notable Performers) from the combine. If a prospect wasn't a Co-MVP, they are listed by their graduation year. There were some tremendous performers in every class (2012-2014). The Co-MVPs and Notable Performers are listed in no particular order.

Co-MVP: Avery Sweeting - 2012 Slot Receiver/Returns (Brunswick High School)
Height - 5-9
Weight - 158 lbs
Wingspan - 5-11
40-Yard Dash - 4.41 (tied for the fastest of the day)
Broad Jump - 9-1.5
Shuttle - 4.33
3-Cone - 7.02

Sweeting had more than 1,400 all-purpose yards and eight touchdowns last season. He split stats with a number of great athletes on the offensive side of the ball. Brunswick had very few kickoff return opportunities last season. The deep men for Brunswick were Sweeting and Justin Coleman (Tennessee signee). Opposing teams chose to kick away from these speedy athletes. Sweeting has a great deal of interest from Middle Tennessee, East Carolina, Western Kentucky, and Kent State. At 5-9 , with long arms, he is a dangerous prospect in space.

Co-MVP: Demoton Boyd - 2013 CB (Lagrange High School)
Height - 5-8.5
Weight - 173
Wingspan - 6-0
40-Yard Dash - 4.41 (tied for the fastest of the day)
Broad Jump - 9-1
Shuttle - 4.16 (top 3 time of the day)
3-Cone - 6.89 (fastest of the day)

As a sophomore Boyd had two kickoff returns for touchdowns, and rushed for more than 500 yards. His primary position is at cornerback. That is also his primary position for the upcoming season. He will play both ways for Lagrange next year. The Lagrange staff will find creative ways to get this explosive athlete in space. He is not only the fastest player for Lagrange, he's also one of the strongest players. He is a heavy favorite to win the Iron Man competition which Lagrange conducts every year. At 5-8.5 he has extremely long arms. He plays much taller than his height.

Co-MVP: Rashard Fant - 2013 ATH - (Our Lady of Mercy (OLM)
Height - 5-9.5
Weight - 158
Wingspan - 5-9
40-Yard Dash - 4.51
Shuttle - 4.11 (fastest of the day)
3-Cone - 7.07

Fant is a tremendous football player. He had eight kickoff returns for touchdowns last season. As a sophomore he played effectively at a number of offensive positions. He's so good that it's difficult to project him at any particular position on the next level. Fant has a chance to be one of the top players in Georgia for the 2013 Class. His start on the 40-yard dash could use some improvement, so his 4.51 was that much more impressive. From 10 to 40 yards he was as fast as anyone at the combine. Recruiting fans will hear a lot about Fant in the years to come. He's fast, and his cutting ability is unbelievable.

Co-MVP: Willie Bolden - 2012 SS/OLB (Brunswick High School)
Height - 6-1
Weight - 184
Wingspan - 6-6.5
40-Yard Dash - 4.61
Broad Jump - 9-6 (2nd furthest of the day)
Shuttle - 4.32
3-Cone - 7.14

Bolden can play either safety position on the high school level. Brunswick's region is full of run-oriented teams. As a result Bolden played as a glorified linebacker. He had 73 tackles on the season, and led the team in forced fumbles. Bolden has a ton of potential. He is currently garnering the most interest from Georgia Tech, Michigan State, NC State, and Kent State. From top to bottom he tested about as well as anyone. His 6-6.5 wingspan will be a great attribute for shedding blocks on the next level. He is getting looks as an outside linebacker and as a safety.

Co-MVP: Qwa Baldwin - 2013 CB (Lagrange High School)
Height - 5-10.5
Weight - 153
Wingspan - 5-11.5
40-Yard Dash - 4.45 (3rd fastest time of the day)
Broad Jump - 9-7 (furthest jump of the day)
Shuttle - 4.13 (2nd fastest of the day)
3-Cone - 7.16

From top to bottom Baldwin may have been the most explosive athlete of the day. He transferred from Coffee County right before the start of last season. The Lagrange staff decided to plug him in right away. He played effectively at cornerback for Lagrange as a sophomore. Now that he's accustomed to Lagrange's system they are looking to play him on both sides of the ball. From his combine performance there's no doubt that Baldwin's measureables are elite.

Co-MVP: 2012 Jordan Sartor - DB/WR (Our Lady of Mercy (OLM)
Height - 6-0
Weight - 175
Wingspan - 6-5
40-Yard Dash - 4.44 (2nd fastest time of the time)
Shuttle - 4.34
Broad Jump - 8-11
3-Cone - 7.39
Power Ball Throw - 35-5 (top 5 throw of the day)

Sartor will likely project as a defensive back on the next level. He has plenty of height at 6-0, with a 6-5 wingspan. Several weeks ago he brought home the gold in the 1A 200 meters at the State Track Meet. He will play on both sides of the ball next season. OLM had a coaching change last year. Coach Mike Earwood led OLM to their most successful season in school history in his first year. OLM will transition to a spread offense next fall. The OLM staff is looking to take full advantage of Sartor's elite speed. He is garnering interest from Air Force, Navy, and Georgia Tech.

2012 Notable Performers

Colton Scurry - 2012 Center Prospect (Whitewater High School)
Height - 6-2.75
Weight - 267
Wingspan - 6-4
40-Yard Dash - 5.29
Broad Jump - 7-11
Shuttle - 4.79
3-Cone - 8.08
Power Ball - 36-0 (2nd furthest of the day)

Scurry has a chance to become one of the top centers in the state of Georgia this season. His measureables are average to above average, but they don't tell the story of his overall game. He is equally as good in run-blocking as he is in pass protection. He also has a nasty streak. He plays extremely hard. Scurry is garnering interest from Georgia Tech, Middle Tennessee, South Florida, and several other BCS Conference programs.

Solomon Jones - 2012 WR (Brunswick High School)
Height - 6-2.5
Weight - 178
Wingspan - 6-3
40-Yard Dash - 4.64
Broad Jump - 9-3
Shuttle - 4.38
3-Cone - 7.34
Power Ball - 35-5 (top 5 of the day)

Jones has interest from Middle Tennessee, UAB, along with a number of other D1A programs. Last fall he was the top receiver for Glynn Academy (4A - public school), a run-oriented program. He recently transferred to Brunswick High School. He will become a part of a wide open offense next season. Look for Jones to post some big numbers this fall.

James Trimmings - 2012 OLB (Brunswick High School)
Height - 6-1
Weight - 194
Wingspan - 6-4.5
40-Yard Dash - 4.60
Broad Jump - 9-2
Shuttle - 4.48
3-Cone - 7.52
Power Ball - 33-4

Trimmings is an outside linebacker prospect who played at defensive end last season. Despite the fact he's more of a natural outside linebacker, that didn't stop him from totaling seven sacks with his hand on the ground. He had an excellent season at defensive end. He is a good player in space who can also put pressure on the quarterback. Trimmings is garnering interest from Middle Tennessee, Troy, and several other D1A programs.

Zach Butts - 2012 Linebacker (Union Grove High School)
Height - 6-0
Weight - 220
Wingspan - 6-1
40-Yard Dash - 4.78
Broad Jump - 8-10
Shuttle - 4.59
3-Cone - 7.36
Power Ball - 32-4

Butts was a 1st Team All-Region performer after his junior campaign. He was also 1st Team All-Southern Crescent (Clayton and Henry Counties combined). He totaled 88 tackles in 10 games last fall. He is a run-stopping middle linebacker with plenty of ability in space. He's receiving interest from Auburn, Duke, North Carolina, Middle Tennessee, Air Force, and Navy. He carries a 3.6 overall GPA. He will have no trouble qualifying.

Jarvis Small - 2012 RB (Brunswick High School)
Height - 5-7.5
Weight - 192
Wingspan - 5-9
40-Yard Dash - 4.59
Broad Jump - 8-11
Shuttle - 4.29
3-Cone - 7.54

Small has rushed for more than 1,000 yards during the last two seasons. He has found the end zone 22 (touchdowns) times. He is a powerful running back with a low center of gravity. He also has well above average speed. He is garnering the most interest from Marshall. He is on the recruiting board of several other D1A programs.

DeAngelo Daniels - 2012 RB Prospect (Lowndes High School)
Height - 5-7.25
Weight - 186
Wingspan - 6-0
40-Yard Dash - 4.58
Shuttle - 4.27
3-Cone - 7.36
Last fall Daniels rushed for more than 400 yards from the fullback position. This fall the Lowndes' staff is looking to play him at both the fullback and H-back positions. Daniels is drawing interest from many D2 programs.

Cameron Starks - 2012 RB/LB Prospect (Southwest Dekalb High School)
Height - 5-11.5
Weight - 183
Wingspan - 6-4
40-Yard Dash - 4.55
Broad Jump - 9-4
Shuttle - 4.39
L-Cone - 7.38
Power Ball - 33-0

Starks' primary position was at outside linebacker last season. He will play on both sides of the ball for Southwest Dekalb in the upcoming season. He will likely wind up as a running back prospect. Running back is his primary position next fall. Starks is a versatile athlete with tremendous measureables. He could become a prospect at several different positions.

2013 Notable Performers

Darron (DJ) Hudson - 2013 DT (Lagrange High School)
Height - 6-1
Weight - 298
Wingspan - 6-10
40-Yard Dash - 5.28
Broad Jump - 8-4
Shuttle - 5.08
3-Cone - 8.36
Power Ball - 38-1 (furthest throw of the day)

Hudson was one of the most impressive performers at the combine. On his 40-yard dash, he popped straight up yet he still managed to clock a 5.28 at 298 lbs. With just a little work, he could run in the 4.9 - 5.0 seconds range. He moves extremely well, and his 6-10 wingspan speaks for itself. Hudson is all arms. Last year he played at fullback for Lagrange. He will play his natural position at defensive tackle this fall. Several Lagrange coaches have told us that despite the fact he's new to the defensive tackle position, he dominated in spring practices.

Darrion Bell - 2013 Center (Charles Drew HS)
Height - 6-1
Weight - 261
Wingspan - 6-4
40-Yard Dash - 5.27
Broad Jump - 8-0
Shuttle - 4.75
3-Cone - 7.98
Power Ball - 34-7 (top 5 throw of the day)

Bell can play every offensive line position on the high school level. He has great feet, and like many offensive lineman, he's highly intelligent. As a sophomore he was a 2nd Team All-Region performer. At 6-1 he has solid height, and his 6-4 wingspan (long arms) will only help him as he progresses towards his senior season. Bell is an excellent student who carries a 3.6 overall GPA.

Myles Willis - 2013 RB/DB/ATH (Marist High School)
Height - 5-9
Weight - 176
Wingspan - 5-10.5
40-Yard Dash - 4.55
Broad Jump - 8-5
Shuttle - 4.33
3-Cone - 7.10

Willis started his high school career at quarterback in his freshman season. There's a chance he'll also play quarterback this season. Willis is possibly the most well-rounded player on the Marist squad. His playing time on defense will depend on whether or not he's the designated starter at signal caller. If not the quarterback he will be a full-time player at running back and cornerback. He totaled three interceptions and eight pass deflections at cornerback last season. Willis is a versatile player who could project at a number of positions on the next level.

Michael Willis - 2013 RB (East Coweta High School)
Height - 5-9
Weight - 181
Wingspan - 6-0
40-Yard Dash - 4.65
Broad Jump - 9-0
Shuttle - 4.31
3-Cone - 7.14

Michael Willis is the younger brother of Tay Willis (former standout running back at East Coweta HS). Like his brother, he has very good speed and great cutting ability. He is the starting running back for East Coweta this fall. Head Coach Clint Wade has big plans for this skilled athlete.

2014 Notable Performers

Jacquan Tobler - 2014 DE/OLB (Brunswick HS)
Height - 6-1
Weight - 217
Wingspan - 6-7
40-Yard Dash - 4.79
Broad Jump - 8-5
Shuttle - 4.82
3-Cone - 8.08
Power Ball - 32-11

Tobler made a huge impact for Brunswick as a freshman. The Brunswick staff inserted him into the lineup at the halfway point of the season. This 2014 prospect totaled six sacks, and nine tackles for a loss in eight games. Tobler is a very talented prospect. His 6-7 wingspan will only help him to shed blocks throughout the remainder of his high school career. He has a ton of potential as an edge rusher.

Corey Dixon - 2014 QB/ATH (Brunswick High School)
Height - 6-3.5
Weight - 176
Wingspan - 6-2
40-Yard Dash - 4.69
Broad Jump - 8-6
Shuttle - 4.38
3-Cone - 7.16

Dixon is an impressive looking athlete. This fall is his first year of varsity football. He will play at quarterbacj and H-Back this season. He will split time at signal caller with Avery Sweeting (Combine Co-MVP). At 6-3.5, he has a very good arm. He could grow into a very good quarterback down the road. His time of 4.69 seconds in the 40 is good for any freshman, especially a quarterback. Dixon is an intriguing prospect.
