Donovan was part of a big squad from Ocean Springs who were on hand for the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns' 7-on-7 event.
"We're all out here working and just trying to get better at learning the system," said Smith. "The change is good for me.
"Making the move to the spread is going to give me more chances to get the ball in my hands.
"Our QB is getting used to what we're doing as receivers and we're getting used to what he does as a quarterback."
Smith was hopeful that he would catch the eye of a Cajuns' coach during the event, so that he could turn his large amount of mail from Louisiana into his first college offer.
"I have talked to Coach Rod," said Donovan. "He called me a month ago and told me that they were excited about me coming."
Waiting for that ice breaking offer can often be a very frustrating part of the recruiting process, but Smith is handling things well.
"I just want to keep going to camps, so that I can get a feel of how things are at each school," said Smith. "I just want to find a good school where I fit in and where I can get my education."
