Westray Wanted to Stay in Secondary

For Westlake Md. Michael Westray, his decision to pick Duke came down to playing opportunity in the secondary.

Michael Westray out of Westake high (Md.) verbally committed to Duke yesterday. Westray, a big cornerback prospect with 4.4-40 speed was offered one of only two spots as a safety for the Blue Devils.

"Everybody is pulling the trigger left and right and they are recruiting as many safeties as possible until two committed. One already committed and I was the second."

Westray chose Duke over an offer from North Carolina State and interest from Penn State and Maryland simply because he wanted to play in the secondary.

"They recruited as a strong safety in a 4-2-5 which means I will have more opportunity to be on the field. NC State wanted me to play linebacker but I wanted to play in the secondary. Since day one, I liked the support Duke showed me."

And, of course, Duke's academic reputation was a big draw as well. "The academic part is also a bonus."

Westray has closed the doors to his recruitment and says he will not be attending any summer camps.
