Player Spotlight: Brian Walker
"I've been hearing from a lot of coaches," said Brian Walker. "Just today I heard from Florida, Alabama, and Vanderbilt. About a week ago is when I heard from the coaches at Wake Forest. The school I'm hearing from most right now is South Carolina."
Both South Carolina and Auburn have extended offers to the 5-foot-10, 181-pound cornerback. Walker and the Mallard Creek Mavericks have gotten off to a fast start this season with a 2-0 record. In the first game against highly-ranked Butler, Walker intercepted Reid Ferguson, one of the top junior prospects in North Carolina.
"This summer I went to camps at N.C. State, Auburn, and South Carolina," said Walker. "I thought I did pretty well, but I always feel like I could have done better. It went all right though. My footwork improved and my physicality. This year I want to just work on becoming a better player and providing leadership to my team."
This is Walker's first season starting on varsity at Mallard Creek. Last season he was a starter on the JV squad. During the season he's hoping to mingle in a few campus visits for games.
"I'd really like to make it back down to South Carolina or Florida," said Walker. "I'd like to play for a team that's going in the right direction. Maybe not for a team that has won a championship recently, but looks to be heading that way. With the coaching staff I want to feel welcomed, like they want me to be part of the team. It all depends on who offers, but I wouldn't mind moving away for college."
This week the Mallard Creek team with face another tough challenge in Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology, also from the Charlotte area. Walker may face the daunting task of covering Germone Hopper (a Clemson commitment) or Kedrick Davis (a North Carolina commitment) depending on who the Cardinals scheme. Walker has run a 4.53 40-yard dash and wears No. 28 for the state's top-ranked team.
