Joey McGuire, head football coach at Cedar Hill High School, calls Aderius Epps a "mauler" at right guard. After going through a number of summer camps, Epps committed to Kansas State in late July.
"Aderius did a great job at the camps," McGuire said. "There were a lot of people talking about him. He went to a bunch; LSU, Baylor, Alabama. When he was at Kansas State he fell in love with Bill Snyder.
"Coach Snyder sat down for a lunch with Aderius and his parents, and after it was over they asked themselves ‘why are we waiting? This is the place to be.' And he went ahead and gave his commitment to Coach Snyder be a Wildcat."
At 6-foot-3, 320-pounds, Kansas State is getting a lot of size to put up on the line. Size alone would get Epps some serious looks, but McGuire says his strength and agility help set him apart from the rest.
"In the weight room, Aderius can squat 700 pounds and 300 on bench," said McGuire. "It's a continual thing with him. He keeps getting stronger. He's always been a tremendous run blocker, and that hasn't tailed off, but he's doing an excellent job in controlling the pass rusher.
"In high school football you run block for so long and so often that it's harder to develop pass blocking skill. He's done well on stunts and deep balls. I think his feet have gotten a lot quicker."
Epps became a starter last season for McGuire. The team went 8-4 advancing to the second round of a 5A state playoffs. Epps played well making 2nd team All-District. Many have Cedar Hill ranked highly in the pre-season. There's no question McGuire will look to Epps for senior leadership.
"He's one of our team captains," McGuire said. "Aderius is a great kid with strong family roots. His father is a pastor. In class he's an A/B student. Kansas State is getting a quality individual in Aderius."
In the season opener, the Longhorns fell 28-13 to Allen in the Tom Landry Classic played at SMU's Ford Stadium. The road doesn't get any easier as they play Denton Guyer, who ended their season last year, in Arlington's Cowboys Stadium.
Epps competed in power lifting at Cedar Hill making it to the regionals and state. He was also on the Longhorn track team throwing the shot put. Other offers include Baylor and Texas Christian.
