Louisiana 5A Top 10 Rankings - Week 1

Jacoby Briscoe and the Carencro Bears entered the season as our number one team in Class 5A and they were up to the task last week against No. 7 East St. John.

    1. CARENCRO (1) -- (1-0) -- Last week, the Bears defeated then-No. 7 East St. John, 35-7. Alex Johnson rushed for 257 yards and three TDs and QB Jalen Nixon (pictured below) passed for 120 yards. DT Jacoby Briscoe had a sack and several QB hurries. This week: at Northside (0-1)

    2. ACADIANA (2) -- (1-0) -- Last week, the Rams defeated 4A Northside, 36-13. RB Jeff Brown staked the defending state champs to an early lead with two TD runs, and Coach Ted Davidson's club never looked back. Keith Sonnier rushed for another score. This week: vs. St. Paul's (1-0) at Superdome

    3. DUTCHTOWN (4) -- (1-0) -- Last week, the Griffins defeated 4A Lutcher, 32-8. Five-star safety Landon Collins shined on both sides of the ball, picking off a pass and running for two TDs. Junior QB Mason Nickens was effective throwing the ball, even in slippery conditions. This week: Donaldsonville (0-1)

    4. ST. PAUL'S (NR) -- (1-0) -- Last week, the Wolves defeated 4A No. 1 Karr, 38-7. Juniors Ed Duplessis and Jay Washington each intercepted a pass, and senior kicker/punter Trent Domingue had a career night. Kris Brumfield and Marcus Gaines scored two TDs apiece. St. Paul's only loss last year came to Acadiana in the quarterfinals. This week: vs. Acadiana (1-0)

    5. ZACHARY (5) -- (1-0) -- Last week, the Broncos defeated Catholic (BR), 29-22. QB Mason Pace threw for 224 yards and Ron Pennington ran for 122 more. Pennington also caught four passes for 118 yards as Zachary rolled up 486 yards of total offense. This week: Thibodaux (0-1)

    6. MANDEVILLE (8) -- (1-0) -- Last week, the Skippers defeated 3A No. 3 Parkview Baptist, 19-16. RB Charles Jones totaled 175 yards on the ground with three TDs. Junior Preston Winget helped keep Parkview's option offense in check (Mandeville's D yielded a stingy 67 yards of total offense in the first half). This week: Catholic-BR (0-1)

    7. DESTREHAN (9) -- (1-0) -- On Monday, the Wildcats defeated South Lafourche, 37-20. QB Dillan Dent ran for 92 yards on six carries. He also tossed a 51-yard TD pass to junior WR Rickey Jefferson on Destrehan's first play from scrimmage. This week: St. James (0-1)

    8. TERREBONNE (10) -- (1-0) -- Last week, the Tigers defeated Ellender, 27-2. Robert Gordon's 45-yard sprint to paydirt gave Terrebonne all the points it needed, and QB Kendrick Boudreaux later hooked up with WR Justin Williams on a 25-yard TD pass. This week: at South Lafourche (0-1)

    9. C.E. BYRD (NR) -- (1-0) -- Last week, the Yellow Jackets defeated No. 3 West Monroe, 30-23. QB Richard Carthon ran for 141 yards, including a 76-yarder. Nick Peoples and Chris Wilson combined for 186 yards on kick returns and Chad Cotton recorded a crucial sack in the second half. This week: vs. Marshall (Tx.) (1-1) at Independence Stadium

    10. WEST MONROE (3) -- (0-1) -- Last week, the Rebels lost to Byrd, 30-23. West Monroe will reportedly be without the services of standout DB Cade Stone (injury). QBs Michael Mims and Conner Osborne have both taken snaps. DE James McFarland (TCU commit) is among the top senior prospects in the state. This week: vs. Calvary Baptist (1-0) at Independence Stadium

    ON THE BUBBLE: Barbe (1-0), Jesuit (1-0), Ouachita Parish (1-0)

    DROPPED OUT: Westgate, East St. John
