There is not much question who the heart and soul is of the team, it is Duke Johnson. The 5'9, 185 pound Miami running back commit was sensational against Northwestern. He scored the game's first TD on a 4th down run play where he split the defense and ran away from the Northwestern DBs. Later he took a kickoff back for a TD before putting the dagger in the Bull's with another long TD run in the middle of the 4th quarter. Johnson played a little defense where he delivered a couple of licks. It is very difficult to find a better football player in the state this year, Johnson makes plays EVERY game and can pretty much play anywhere on the field. There is some question where he will play at the next level, the 'Canes could use him at both CB and RB, but there is no question he will make a major impact at the next level.
A second Miami commit is LT Ereck Flowers. It was the first time seeing him live in a game and he did not disappoint. All of 6'6, he handled Eric Kinsey all night long. Flowers is very athletic with great bend, his future is in the league if he continues to develop. We really liked everything about his game and there is nothing but upside remaining. Flowers was a little under the radar six months ago, but FSU, Bama, and several others are still in hot pursuit. He is a solid Miami commit however.
Keith Brown is the third Miami commit on the team and he was a lot more active on Saturday night than he was a year ago. Brown has added 10-15 pounds of muscle, but still has that legit 4.5 speed. He is a high ceiling player and a typical high quality Dade County linebacker. Seems to possess the versatility to play each of the LB spots. Brown is solidly committed, but is expected to officially visit LSU, Clemson, FSU, and perhaps one more before signing day. After missing some time as a junior, Brown needs a healthy senior season.
Defensive tackle Teko Powell is another player that has gained some weight over the off-season. Up in the 290 range, he is one of the top DTs in South Florida. We have seen Norland a bunch over the past two years and Powell has always made plays. We think there is a ton of upside here down the road and his recruitment may go similarly to that of Elkino Watson a year ago. That was a lot of early interest, but few offers until the end of his senior season where FSU, Miami, and UF all got involved. He has high interest in Louisville and FSU at this time.
With the transfer of Brandon Snell(Carol City), it is up to Darren Owi to take pressure off of Johnson. He did that in this came with five catches including a big-time play for a TD. Owi caught a short pass, made the CB miss and jetted into the end-zone. He has filled out this year with at least 15 pounds of good weight. Owi does not have any offers right now, but they will come at the end of the year. At 6'1+, he has the size, tools, and athleticism to play D-1 ball.
