Louisiana 5A Top 10 Rankings - Week 3

Junior QB Mason Nickens will direct the Dutchtown offense against Zachary Friday night in a Baton Rouge-area 5A showdown pitting two undefeated and highly-ranked teams. What's happening around the state in 5A? Read further to find out.

1. CARENCRO (1) -- (3-0) -- Last week, the Bears defeated 2A Calvary Baptist, 69-48. Carencro moved from No. 50 to No. 48 in Scout's Top 50 national rankings, but the defense is a valid concern after Calvary threw for nearly 600 yards last Friday. RB Alex Johnson is the state's leading rusher and is already closing in on the 1,000-yard mark. He had 340 yards last week. WB Jaylan Rose scored on five touchdown runs. This week: Lafayette (0-3)

2. ST. PAUL'S (2) -- (3-0) -- Last week, the Wolves defeated 4A McDonogh #35, 34-16. FB Dylan Long and RB Kris Brumfield combined for 263 yards rushing, according to Dart Volz of the (New Orleans) Times-Picayune. Marcus Gaines caught a TD pass from QB Patrick Duncan. This week: Covington (3-0)

3. DUTCHTOWN (3) -- (3-0) -- Last week, the Griffins defeated Sulphur, 45-14. Mason Nickens connected on 8-of-13 passes for 245 yards. His favorite target was 6-foot-3 junior WR Shelby Christy (6-178, three TDs). Five-star safety Landon Collins ran for a couple of scores on offense and also returned a punt for six points. This week: No. 5 Zachary (3-0)

4. ACADIANA (4) -- (2-1) -- Last week, the Rams defeated New Iberia Senior, 35-7. RB Jeff Brown dashed for three touchdowns and QB Stryker Trahan had a four-yard TD run. Brown, a senior speedster, finished with 173 yards. This week: Sam Houston (2-1)

5. ZACHARY (5) -- (3-0) -- Last week, the Broncos defeated 3A-ranked East Feliciana, 36-32. QB Mason Pace threw for more than 300 yards. LB Larry Cage, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound junior, led the team in tackles for the third straight week. This week: at No. 3 Dutchtown (3-0)

6. MANDEVILLE (6) -- (3-0) -- Last week, the Skippers defeated 3A Jewel Sumner, 34-0. QB Matt Bergeron rolled up 241 yards passing with a couple of TDs. RB Charles Jones scored a TD. WRs Xavier Marcus (two TDs) and Garrett Dinicola topped the receiving charts (151 total yards). This week: at East Ascension (3-0)

7. C.E. BYRD (8) -- (3-0) -- Last week, the Yellow Jackets defeated 4A Fair Park, 63-8. Star QB Richard Carthon reached the end zone on a 10-yard keeper -- his only rushing attempt -- as Byrd pulled its starters early, according to Adam Hester of the Shreveport Times. This week: at Ruston (2-1)

8. BROTHER MARTIN (NR) -- (3-0) -- Last week, the Crusaders defeated Central Lafourche, 41-7. Texas A&M commit Julien Obioha paces a defense that is allowing less than 10 points per game. Junior offensive lineman Ryan Hoefeld is a punishing blocker who is visiting Mississippi State this week. This week: at John Ehret (0-3)

9. SCOTLANDVILLE (NR) -- (3-0) -- Last week, the Hornets defeated 4A Belaire, 61-0. Junior WR Larry Clark is having a breakout year, while senior LB Henry Taylor heads up a defense that has surrendered a miserly six points all year (with two shutouts). This week: 2A Northeast (1-2)

10. JESUIT (NR) -- (3-0) -- Last week, the Blue Jays defeated 4A-ranked Archbishop Shaw, 34-17. RB Paul Stanton showed off his versatility, gaining 115 yards receiving and 91 rushing with two touchdowns. Dual-threat QB Cam Dobbins also crossed the goal-line on a two-yard plunge. This week: 3A De La Salle (1-2)
