Louisiana 5A Top 10 Rankings - Week 8

There's a new sheriff in town. St. Paul's takes over the No. 1 ranking in Class 5A after Acadiana knocked off Carencro last week. Read further to get a full report from around the state on Louisiana's largest classification.

1. ST. PAUL'S (2) -- (8-0) -- Last week, the Wolves defeated Ponchatoula, 52-24. Coach Ken Sears' team hasn't lost a regular-season game since 2009. St. Paul's enjoyed its largest offensive output of the year by scoring 52 points; the Wolves put up 48 on Mandeville in week five. Kris Brumfield ran for three TDs vs. Ponchatoula, according to Dart Volz of the (New Orleans) Times-Picayune. Sophomore Marcus Gaines ran for two touchdowns. Dylan Long, who added an offer from Nicholls State a few days ago, contributed 66 yards from his fullback position. Long leads the Wolves in rushing with 573 yards. Junior safety Jay Washington is getting serious looks from LSU and Alabama. He picked off a pass vs. Ponchatoula. Trent Domingue booted a 36-yard field goal. Players to Watch: DL Gustavo Garcia, RB Markell Powell, LB Ed Duplessis. St. Paul's only 2010 loss was to state champ Acadiana in the quarterfinals. This week: at Northshore (3-5)

2. DUTCHTOWN (3) -- (8-0) -- Last week, the Griffins defeated Woodlawn-Baton Rouge, 23-17 (OT). Five-star prospect Landon Collins ran for 162 yards on 18 carries, according to Fred Aldrich of the (Baton Rouge) Advocate. Woodlawn almost pulled off the upset, but the Panthers missed a 40-yard field goal at the end of regulation. Collins also snuffed out a fake punt by corralling Brenton Terrance behind the line of scrimmage. Tyler Sarrazin nailed a 38-yard field goal for Dutchtown. Junior QB Mason Nickens ran for 106 yards on nine attempts. The Griffins, like St. Paul's, haven't dropped a regular-season game since 2009. Last fall, head coach Benny Saia's squad garnered the top seed in the 5A bracket and reached the quarterfinals before losing to Westgate. 3. BYRD (4) -- (7-0) -- Last week, the Yellow Jackets defeated Southwood, 49-8. Byrd has hung a minimum of 30 points on the board in every game. The Yellow Jackets built a quick 35-0 lead early vs. Southwood, according to Jimmy Watson of the Shreveport Times. WR Brandon Hudgens hauled in a touchdown pass from QB Richard Carthon. Christian Willis ran for two scores and Xavier Long chimed in with a 4-yard plunge to paydirt. Lucilious Henderson returned a Southwood fumble for six points. Louis Mills tacked on a 40-yard scoring jaunt. Byrd knocked off West Monroe in week one; the Rebels were nationally-ranked at the time. This week: Captain Shreve (4-4)

4. JESUIT (5) -- (8-0) -- Last week, the Blue Jays defeated then-No. 8 Brother Martin, 41-3. Jesuit amassed 551 yards of total offense, according to Mike Strom of the Times-Picayune. QB Cameron Dobbins and RB Paul Stanton combined to gain 276 yards on the ground. Austin Duncan dashed for two TDs and 65 yards rushing. William Wall intercepted two passes. Three-star linebacker Deion Jones (Nebraska commit) has been a devastating defensive presence all year. OL Todd Jacquet is committed to Tulane. This week: No. 5 Archbishop Rummel (7-0)

5. ARCHBISHOP RUMMEL (6) -- (7-0) -- Last week, the Raiders defeated Chalmette, 48-6. Junior QB Damian Williams tossed two TD passes and totaled 126 yards through the air. J.J. Brown added two scoring runs, according to Michael Harris of the Times-Picayune. Players to Watch: OL Dominick Bilich, OL Patrick Kliebert, OL Dylan Manale, CB Jordan Frost. This week: at No. 4 Jesuit (8-0)

6. CARENCRO (1) -- (7-1) -- Last week, the Bears lost to Acadiana, 32-14. Senior back Alex Johnson had 81 yards on 15 rushes with two TDs. Jalen Nixon threw for 81 yards. The Bears took an early 7-0 lead before Acadiana stormed back with 24 unanswered points. Two weeks ago, Carencro beat Barbe. Three weeks ago, Barbe soundly beat Acadiana. That's why all three are ranked No. 6. Players to Watch: Three-star DL Jacoby Briscoe, WB Jaylan Rose, OL Jordan Walker, WR Shawn Thomas. This week: at Westgate (5-3)

6. ACADIANA (NR) -- (6-2) -- Last week, the Rams defeated then-No. 1 Carencro, 32-14. Jeff Brown, Shane Francis, Keith Sonnier and Stryker Trahan combined to run for 199 yards as Acadiana's split-back veer offense controlled the clock. Defensive linemen D'ondre Chanet and Claude George and linebackers Zack Burch and Darius Ridgeway held Carencro's powerful offense to 193 yards. DB De'Edward Cormier, a sophomore, returned an interception 52 yards for a TD. This week: at Comeaux (3-5)

6. BARBE (NR) -- (5-3) -- Last week, the Buccaneers defeated Sam Houston, 48-7. Barbe breezed to an easy win, despite playing without starting QB Kennon Fontenot and star junior tight end Desean Smith. Sophomore standout Trey Quinn ran for a touchdown, according to Rodrick Anderson of the Southwest Daily News. Courtney Galentine gashed Sulphur's defense for 152 yards on 14 tries. Barbe's three losses are to Carencro, Evangel Christian and St. Thomas More. This week: Sulphur (5-3)

9. EAST ST. JOHN (8) -- (6-2) -- Last week, the Wildcats defeated Destrehan, 20-0. Led by four-star CB/QB Darion Monroe and three-star DT Gerron Borne, ESJ has captured five straight wins. The Wildcats' only losses were to Carencro and John Curtis Christian. Deszmann Broussard returned a kickoff 99 yards vs. Destrehan, according to Michael Harris of the Times-Picayune. This week: Higgins (5-2)

10. WEST MONROE (9) -- (6-2) -- Last week, the Rebels defeated Ruston, 38-21. Steven Jones ran for 172 yards and three TDs. Players to Watch: DE James McFarland, DE Terrell Lathan, LB Deano Casola, DB Cade Stone, RB Bubba Reeves, ATH Jacob Tyson. This week: Cocoa (Fla.) (4-3)

10. OUACHITA PARISH (10) -- (6-2) -- Last week, the Lions defeated Natchitoches-Central, 28-16. No other details were available. Players to Watch: DL/RB Jarett Triplett (pictured below), RB Demarkus Sledge, WR Taijuan Thomas, QB Quentin Wheeler. This week: Pineville (4-4)
