Lincoln, NE - The Nebraska basketball team kicked off their inaugural season as part of the Big Ten Conference with a 76-54 exhibition win over the Doane Tigers. Brandon Ubel and Dylan Talley led the way with 12 points each for the Huskers.
The Huskers jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first six points of the game. That run was punctuated by an alley-oop dunk from Bo Spencer to Caleb Walker. Nebraska took a 38-18 lead into the half.
Doane attempted a comeback at the beginning of the second half, by capitalizing on sloppy play from the Huskers and hitting a number of shots from outside. The Tigers went on a 25-12 run to start the second half, cutting the lead to nine, 52-43 at one point. However, the Huskers were able stave off the rally, by taking advantage of Doane's turnovers and closing out the victory.
After the game Coach Doc Sadler said that despite the easy win, Nebraska has plenty of things to fix.
"We've got a lot of things to work on. They played harder than we did. You don't like to admit that." The Huskers committed 28 turnovers in the game with 16 in the second half alone. Sadler was obviously not pleased with the sloppy play. "I don't think I've had a team that's had 28 turnovers in a game. It wasn't a pressurized defense. It was extreme carelessness on our behalf."
There were a couple of bright spots for the Huskers. Spencer, a senior playing in his first year after transferring from LSU, played especially well, running the offense effectively and creating turnovers on defense. He finished the night with nine points, four rebounds and four assists.
Another key player for the Huskers was Christopher Niemann. The junior center has been hampered by knee injuries throughout his career, but he looked healthy on Monday night, posting eight points in 12 minutes for the Huskers.
A total of 14 players saw action for Nebraska in their only exhibition game of the season, including three true freshmen.
The Huskers will be in action at the Devaney Center on Friday, November 11th when they will take on South Dakota in their season opener. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
