Juco offensive tackle visits T-town

Donald Hawkins, three-star junior college offensive tackle from Northwest Mississippi in Tunica, Miss., has reeled in several scholarship offers this fall. The University of Alabama is looking to add more linemen in this year's class. Hawkins discussed the recent trip and official visits.

"My top five offers right now are Oklahoma State, Texas, Florida, Georgia and Mississippi State," Donald Hawkins said. "Alabama recently started recruiting me. They invited me to their game this past weekend, and I went down there.

"Alabama told me they have been looking at me for about three weeks. They told me I am a good player. They want me to come back for an official visit.

"I think for them to offer me, one of their tackles will need to leave early for the NFL draft. I think if he decides to leave they will offer. If he doesn't they won't offer me."

Hawkins talked about his first visit to Alabama for the game against the top two teams in the country.

"The visit was nice," he said. "It was a good experience. Both teams are very good. I enjoyed myself. I really didn't know Alabama was recruiting me. I had a great time.

"The atmosphere was crazy. I was out on the field, and when I walked out I was in shock. I saw all the people, and I saw Jumbotrons. I was like 'damn'. It was like an NFL stadium.

"Alabama is a great team. They always compete for SEC and national championships. They are loaded with talent. I really don't think they need me to compete for a national championship."

Hawkins will take his first official visit next week to Texas. He will visit Florida (11/26) and Oklahoma State (12/2). He remains committed to Oklahoma State. He shared more about the next three trips.

"I am not big on names," Hawkins said of the Longhorns. "I am not just going to visit a school because they are Texas or USC. Texas has shown a lot of interest. Coach Searels is making sure I know I am a need for them, not just a want. He is doing a great job recruiting me.

"Florida was the school I never thought I would get a chance to play for. Florida only recruits the best players. When they called me I was shocked. I was like, 'damn this is Florida'. I was always interested in them. I could see myself in a Florida uniform.

"I am still committed to them," Hawkins added of Oklahoma State. "They are always going to win. I hope they make it to the national championship this year."

Hawkins is also considering a visit to Athens.

"I might take an unofficial visit to Georgia," he said. "I like the coaches there. The only reason I am not as high on them as the other schools is they waited too long to offer."

Hawkins will graduate Northwest Mississippi in December.
