U.S. Army Combine Notebook

National Recruiting Analysts Chad Simmons, Brandon Huffman and Bob Lichtenfels weigh in on a few of the best performers at the U.S. Army Combine.

  • Camden County (Kingsland, GA) four-star quarterback Brice Ramsey looked good, although he wasn't quite as sharp as usual.

"I've seen him look a whole lot better," said National Recruiting Analyst Chad Simmons. "He threw the ball a little bit high, a little bit behind people. I still think he's one of the top quarterbacks in the country - in my region. He has the arm, he has the size. He'll probably be a top ten guy for me in the south. He's a Scout 100 guy right now. He's definitely a Scout 300 kid."

SKINNY: The 6-foot-3, 197-pound junior is a verbal commitment to Georgia. He also holds offers from Florida and Clemson. Ramsey camped at all three of the aforementioned schools. Camden County went 12-1 in 2011 with its sole setback coming via a 32-31 loss to Colquitt County in the Georgia 5A playoffs. Ramsey connected on 80-of-125 passes for 1,308 yards with 17 TDs and only two picks. He also averaged nearly 41 yards per punt and put 60 of 79 kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks.

  • Hillside (Durham, NC) running back Khris Francis (5-9, 180) is a playmaker.

"He's a pretty good athlete out of North Carolina," said Simmons. "I only saw him in one rep today, but he looked like a pretty good athlete."

SKINNY: Francis also caught the eye of East Recruiting Analyst John Garcia at the Proving Ground Combine, which was held a few days prior to the Army event. Francis might not be a big back, but he's durable. As a junior, he toted the rock 301 times for 2,250 yards and 31 touchdowns for Hillside, which posted an 11-2 mark.

  • Susquehanna Township (Harrisburg, PA) '14 running back Colby Grant:

"Track kid," said Bob Lichtenfels. "Very good speed. Elusive after the catch. Running back/wide receiver combo who will probably be a slot guy in college. Good hands, tough kid."

SKINNY: The 5-foot-8, 170-pounder has 4.38 speed. Grant gained 135 yards on four carries in the Indians' 62-6 rout of Waynesboro. He also caught two passes for 58 yards in that contest with a trio of TDs and a pair of two-point conversions. Susquehanna Township finished the season with a 7-5 record. During one-on-one drills, Grant showed the ability to adjust and make the difficult catch on passes thrown behind him.

  • Apopka (FL) '14 QB Zack Darlington:

"Coach's son," said Simmons. "He's young. He's only a sophomore. Pretty accurate kid who still needs to get better arm strength."

SKINNY: Darlington's older brother Ty was also in San Antonio. Ty Darlington, a four-star prospect and the nation's second-ranked center, played for the East in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Ty is an Oklahoma commitment. During one-on-one drills, Zack fired multiple line-drive passes that zipped to their target.

  • Wakefield (Raleigh, NC) QB Connor Mitch :

"Good size," said Simmons. "Plays at that good program. Good arm; has a lot of things going for him. Has five or six offers."

SKINNY: The 6-foot-3, 210-pound junior has offers from North Carolina, North Carolina State, and East Carolina. Mitch aired it out frequently last season with 425 attempts. He completed 254 of those tosses - almost 60% - for 3,832 yards and 48 touchdowns with nine interceptions. He rang up 605 yards passing with seven TDs in a 67-58 loss to Leesville Road.

  • San Ramon Valley (Danville, CA) QB Cameron Birse:

"Really good arm," said Brandon Huffman. "Needs to work on a little bit better touch on his shorter passes."

SKINNY: Birse is a 6-foot-3, 200-pound junior. He served as a backup last season to four-star California commit Zach Kline.

  • Seton Catholic Central (Binghamton, NY) QB Caleb Scepaniak:

"He's a big kid," said Lichtenfels. "Almost 6-foot-5. A little bit raw; still working on his mechanics. Doesn't have the polish yet of some of the other guys in the east. He's big with arm strength and decently accurate. He's probably one of the better guys in New York."

    SKINNY: Scepaniak is a 6-foot-5, 230-pound junior.

  • Memphis (TN) East linebacker Marcus Robinson:

"Did good today," said Simmons. "Good sideline-to-sideline speed. I liked him in coverage. Plays for one of the top programs in the Memphis area."

SKINNY: The 6-foot-3, 215-pound junior consistently collected 8-to-10 tackles per game for East. Robinson's teammates included four-star Vanderbilt commit Brian Kimbrow and four-star Mississippi State commit Will Redmond.

  • Whitehaven (Memphis, TN) RB Mark Dodson:

"Very fast. Tested well today," said Simmons. "Great speed. Took his team to the state championship game this year in Tennessee. Already getting looks from Tennessee and Alabama...very quick - a smaller back - but extremely quick."

SKINNY: The 5-foot-9, 175-pound junior has been offered by Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Memphis, Arkansas State, Northern Illinois and Western Kentucky. He rushed for more than 1,500 yards as a sophomore. As a junior, Dodson led Whitehaven to a 14-1 season.

  • Bellarmine Prep (Tacoma, WA) RB Isaiah Flynn:

"Speed," said Huffman. "He can fly. Good cut-back ability. Catches the ball really well. Not real big; small, shifty guy."

SKINNY: The 5-foot-10, 170-pound junior helped his squad to an 11-1 mark in 2011. Flynn gashed Mt. Tahoma for 299 yards on the ground in Bellarmine Prep's 41-7 victory in late September. During one-on-one drills, Flynn shook away from a hold to grab a long pass.
