James Making it Happen

Nick James burst on to the recruiting scene at the U.S. Army Combine last January. Just over a year later, James is keeping a much lower profile. With his college decision set on Mississippi State, James is working hard to ensure he meets freshman entrance requirements in the coming months.

"I had a great visit," said James. "Josh Boyd was my host and he showed me around and told me about everything. I appreciate him for that.

"I had never met him before, but I really like him. I feel like we can be twin towers next year."

Some of Boyd's best advice came about future position coach Chris Wilson.

"Josh told me all about Coach Wilson," said James. "He told me what a good person he was and what kind of coach he is.

"He told me all about how they like to play defense and what all Coach Wilson expects from them. You have to know all about defense to play defensive line for Coach Wilson.

"He is the defensive coordinator, so he expects a lot from his players."

The weekend was filled with several activities, but the Long Beach standout reports that the highlight of his trip was getting to know more about his team.

"It was good to be able to talk with all of the players about what to expect," said James. "I liked getting to spend time with the guys who I am going to be playing with.

"That's the main thing for me, really. I liked getting to know everybody better."

Before leaving campus, James spent some time with Coach Mullen in his office.

"He told me about how much he wants me up there and how excited he is about me being a part of the team," said James. "He told me to keep working hard and do what I need to do to be ready to go next year.

"I am working hard on everything now and I am going to be up there by June 1st if not a little before."
