Syracuse reels in JUCO DT

On Wednesday, Syracuse got a commitment from JUCO defensive end Mark Garrick and the school followed it up Thursday with another pledge from the JUCO ranks.

6-foot-5, 300-pound defensive tackle Zian Jones became the 24th verbal commitment (including a pair of "soft verbal" pledges) to Syracuse University on Thursday afternoon.

The West Los Angeles (CA)Junior College standout joins fellow JUCO prospect Mark Garrick, who committed to SU on Wednesday, as the only players in the Class of 2012 with college football experience.

While at West LA, the 3-technique registered 14 ½ tackles for loss and four sacks in just 10 games. Jones also was credited with 45 total tackles, a blocked kick and a pass break-up.

Jones helped to lead the Wildcats defense to the top of the American Pacific Conference ranks in scoring defense and sacks on the way to a 7-3 season.

Syracuse now has six verbal pledges from defensive lineman in the Class of 2012, which is a position of need with the graduation of two players in the rotation as well as the departure of redshirt junior Chandler Jones to the NFL.

Stay on for the latest on Jones, who also had offers from New Mexico State and Eastern Michigan, as we reach out to him.
