LSU fans have been looking for good news after five-star QB Gunner Kiel surprised everyone by enrolling at Notre Dame a few days ago, and the Tigers got just that on Saturday when LB Lorenzo Phillips committed to head coach Les Miles. Chalk up an assist to former high school teammate and current LSU RB Kenny Hilliard, who played a big role in the recruitment of Phillips.
There's talk that LSU could make a late run at Texas A&M commit Darion Monroe (East St. John). Monroe is visiting Utah this week and is tentatively scheduled to visit Tulane next week.
ULM added verbals from a couple of in-state DBs: Tre Hunter (Richwood) and Tyren Hills (Hahnville). Hills switched his pledge from Minnesota to the Warhawks on Saturday evening.
How important is Dillon Gordon to the John Curtis basketball team? Answer: the Patriots lost their first game of the year on Friday while playing without Gordon, who was on his official visit to LSU. Gordon is committed to LSU as a tight end.
Catholic-New Iberia defensive lineman Drew Hebert issued a verbal pledge to Nicholls State. Hebert helped the Panthers to the Class 3A quarterfinals last year. Teammate Joe Lissard, a junior QB, should be a highly-recruited prospect.
Alabama commit Denzel Devall (Bastrop) was moved from DE to MLB on Scout.com. He's a four-star and the No. 8 player in the nation at his position.
LSU also added RB Jeremy Hill out of Redemptorist. Hill was a four-star RB in the 2011 class.
McDonogh #35 QB Jyron Walters is looking for a destination after Arkansas State informed the former Red Wolves commit that he no longer had a scholarship offer. Walters was recruited by former ASU head coach Hugh Freeze, who moved on to Ole Miss following Houston Nutt's dismissal.
Amite QB Reginald Porter committed to Utah, where he will play defensive back. Porter led the Warriors to the Class 3A title game in December.
