Roberts Has Positive Impression With Pitt

New London (WI) head coach Scott Eggart gives us perspective on star lineman Gabe Roberts' recruitment, which included an official visit to Pittsburgh last weekend.

New London (WI) head coach Scott Eggart says the recruitment has picked up as of late for his star lineman Gabe Roberts. Roberts has had interest in Wisconsin for awhile. That's not much of a shock for an in-state kid. However, after performing well at a prospect camp there a couple years ago—under the tutelage of Bob Bostad who has now moved over to be Pitt's offensive line coach.

"Gabe went up there to a camp couple years ago, and he had a really nice camp," Eggart said. "All he's done since then is gotten bigger. All of a sudden, that's a really big boy out there."

The best way for Eggart to describe him?

"He's 290, but he wears it like he's 260," Eggart added. "He was all-conference both ways this past year. He was just named to the Wisconsin All-Star Game that will happen in July. He was all-conference both ways, all-region."

While Eggart added that Wisconsin is definitely a school of interest, the Badgers are offering Roberts as a preferred walk-on. The Panthers are offering Roberts a full scholarship, not to mention the chance for Roberts to play under Bostad—someone that Eggart feels has had a huge impact in his recruiting.

"He's been recruited by Wisconsin, but more by Bostad," Eggart explained. "It's been a whirlwind for the young man. He wasn't on the radar, and (the Pitt offer) happened in a span of four or five days.

"Tuesday, Bostad was here (at the school), and he said, ‘I doubt we could get you (for an official visit that weekend). Two days later, he called and said, ‘We can get you here this weekend.'"

According to Eggart, Roberts' official visit to Pitt blew him away—and not just because of Bostad.

"He was very impressed," Eggart said. "In the beginning, it was Wisconsin. He didn't know what to expect. He came back really impressed with the facilities. He obviously loves Bostad and (head coach Paul) Chryst. He developed a relationship with them. He knows Bostad knows his stuff. He likes how Bostad coaches. He was very impressed overall by the whole trip."

Now, it's decision time. With signing day less than a week away, Roberts has an official visit on tap to Madison, then will make his decision—whether to stay at home and take that preferred walk-on status, or take the full scholarship to a school like Pitt, a school very new to him but one with familiar faces.

"I think (he'll decide) probably on signing day," Eggart added. "I think I'm really intrigued by Pittsburgh. He seems really happy with them. He seems pretty comfortable. If Pitt gets him, you're getting a great kid. You tell him to work, he's going to do it. He knows what a weight room looks like, and he's as strong as they come."
