Commitment Capsule: Offensive Line

With signing day fast approaching, Badger Nation will examine each position and the impact it will have on the program. In the fourth part of our series, we look at the offensive line, which has a lot of players that are still considering the Badgers heading toward signing day.

Number of Scholarship Players added: 1 (Dan Voltz – rated four stars and No.7 OG overall, Walker Williams – rated three-stars and No.40 OT overall)

Number of Scholarship Players lost: 3 (Jake Current, Josh Oglesby and Kevin Zeitler)

Recruiting Story: (Voltz) To say the commitment of Voltz in March got Wisconsin's recruiting class off to a good start would be an understatement. Even more impressive that despite all the turnover with the coaching staff, having arguably its biggest recruit not only stay committed but enroll early has got to be an even bigger bonus for the Badgers.

Voltz started drawing attention right after his sophomore season. At 6-5, 290 pounds, Voltz was the perfect fit for a number of schools on the offensive line. He camped at Illinois, Northwestern and Wisconsin during the 2010 summer and by the following October, those three schools had offered along with Arizona. He was just getting started.

Cincinnati, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Stanford and West Virginia all came in and extended offers. Even defending national champion Auburn and current national champion Alabama thought he was good enough to compete in the SEC and offered. But as good as those schools were, Voltz valued Wisconsin that much more because it met his three factors.

One was a rich tradition of developing linemen. Second was a great atmosphere, which he saw from being in attendance when UW beat No.1 Ohio State – calling the crowd amazing and wild. Third was a close proximity to home so his family could come see him play (Madison is two hours from his house which allowed him to visit UW approximately six times before making his decision). Needless to say, Wisconsin was the perfect fit.

"Obviously when a school like Alabama decides to offer you or think that highly of you, it feels great," said Voltz as his announcement press conference. "It's something I really looked into and I really thought, "Could I see myself playing there?" It was tough to say no to that but in the end, I am a Midwest guy and I wanted to stay close to home. That's why I chose Wisconsin over those schools, even though they are great schools and great football programs. It's just not really the best fit for me."

Voltz played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 7, was an all-state selection as a senior by the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association and was a team captain that also lettered in wrestling and track and field.

(Williams) One of the big advantages for Wisconsin playing in the Rose Bowl was the amount of publicity it gave the Badgers throughout the country, allowing its brand of football to be showcased in a new set of homes throughout the country. One of those players watching UW's success was Williams from Tacoma, Wash., and he was intrigued.

Interested in how Wisconsin produces quality linemen year after year, Williams sent him film out to the UW staff. What the UW staff saw was a 6-7, 330-pound tackle that could move and be physical. So, without ever recruited that area, the Badgers extended an offer - joining UCLA and Oregon State – and offering Williams an invite to the UW spring game.

Williams flew out with his parents at their own cost (it was the first time he has been east of the Rocky Mountains) and the solid relationship started. He met with the coaching staff, got to meet UW's offensive linemen and see the campus. His interest in Wisconsin was starting to grow.

Williams continued to grab Pac 12 offers – getting BCS scholarships from Colorado, Utah and Washington – and visited those schools over the summer, but he still wanted to learn more about the Badgers. He had dinner with quarterback and UW verbal commit Bart Houston to ask some basic questions. He also flew with his mom back to Madison for a second time at their own cost so Williams could spend one-on-one time with the coaching staff and the players while his mom could see what UW offered her son academically. For three days, Williams seemingly got an easy answer for every tough question he had.

On the flight home, Williams knew that he had found his place of choice, and decided he no longer wanted to wait until the end of summer to announce his decision.

"They are a really close-knit group and you can tell it's real," Williams told Badger Nation of the UW players. "I've been to some other places where there are players that straight up don't like each other. They don't hang out together because of the rivalry they have on the team. I hung out with Peter Konz and we sat down to have lunch and we sat with some defensive linemen. At some schools, you really wouldn't see that."

Williams would make one more trip to UW for an official visit and his trip was an offensive lineman's dream for Williams. In Wisconsin's 48-17 victory over Nebraska, the offensive line helped pave the way for 231 rushing yards, created a pocked for Wisconsin to pass for 255 yards, go on four scoring drives of nine plays or longer and see the Badgers chew up over seven minutes on two second-half scoring drives.

"It was an electric feeling," Williams said. "Everybody was super pumped, and that's exactly what one would expect when you blow out another top 10 team. It was a great atmosphere around there and everyone was really psyched to win that game, especially the way they did."

National Recruiting Analyst Allen Trieu's Scouting Report on Voltz: Voltz is a tough blue collar lineman who will make the switch from high school tackle to guard at the next level. He's a strong drive blocker who plays with good pad level and finishes his blocks. Even though he played tackle, we still see room for improvement in pass protection, but he's a high intensity, high motor guy that should be a multi-year college starter.

West Recruiting Analyst Brandon Huffman's Scouting Report on Williams: Williams has made strides from last season. He's really reshaped his body and looks much more agile and he's physical. Initially, it was hard to get a real true gauge of how good he is, because he plays in one of the smallest levels of football in the state that's not 8-man, so he's often going against undersized defensive ends. But at least he's dominant at his level. When we saw him at the Semper Fidelis Bowl, against equal competition, we saw what we had hoped- that he could more than hold his own against elite talent. His strengths are his leverage and his drive blocking skills. He still needs to work on his feet a little more and improve lateral movement. Because his team rarely threw, we're still not quite sure on how good he is in pass pro, though he was steady all week in Phoenix. We initially rated him as a tackle, but now we think he projects best as an interior lineman as a guard. He'll likely need a redshirt year to continue to work on his body, but he can probably contribute by his RS freshman year.

Who did the Badgers miss out on: Offensive line was one of the main areas of focus on this recruiting class and with the Badgers offering so many prospects, it's natural that UW would miss on some. Danny Isidora had Wisconsin in his final two, but wanted to stay close to home and play for his childhood favorite Miami. The same could be said for Jonah Pirsig, who has UW in his final three along with Iowa but wanted to play for Minnesota.

Five-star Kyle Kalis (Michigan), four-stars Taylor Decker (Ohio State) and Ryan Watson (Purdue) and three-star Ben Braden (Michigan), Mike Madaras (Maryland), Abraham Garcia (Louisville) and Greg Pyke (Georgia) were offered but never showed tons of interest while three-star Kwayde Miller (San Diego State) reportedly lost his scholarship after UW filled up their linemen allotment.

How the position could change: Needless to say, this position could change a lot and the dominos will start to fall this weekend. First, however, the Badgers need to find out where they stand with J.J. Denman and Kyle Dodson.

Denman

Originally committed to Penn State, Denman switched his verbal commitment to Wisconsin after taking an unofficial visit for the Indiana game. Denman, rated a four-star offensive tackle and No.17 in the country, developed a really solid relationship with Joe Rudolph, Bob Bostad and Paul Chryst. However, with all of them leaving for Pittsburgh, Denman was candid in saying that the current UW staff isn't who I committed to. Taking official visits to Pittsburgh and Rutgers, Denman was supposed to take an official to Wisconsin this weekend, but he canceled after he committed to Rutgers, which is close to his home and where his father is a graduate. Three days later, Rutgers coach Greg Schiano bolted to the NFL and Tampa Bay, leaving Denman and all the other recruits reeling. Could Denman switch back? It's certainly possible but unlikely. Still, the new coach wouldn't be the coach Denman committed to.

Dodson

At this point, it appears more likely that Denman will switch back than Kyle Dodson once again committing 100 percent to UW. A four-star tackle ranked just behind Denman at No.24 in the country, Dodson committed to Wisconsin in June despite a late offer from his childhood favorite Ohio State 24 hours before. His reason was that the Badgers had recruited him from the start while the Buckeyes took their time with him, thinking he would be an easy commit as soon as they offered and allowed them to go after ‘better' athletes.

That changed in late November when Ohio State hired Urban Meyer, who made it a priority to get OSU's recruiting class in order. One of the first people he reached out to was Dodson, something Dodson wouldn't comment on when we talked to him following his official visit to UW for the Penn State game. Over the next several weeks, Dodson said he was still committed to Wisconsin, but has taken official visits to Ohio State, Michigan State, Auburn and USC. It's unknown when Dodson will officially announce, but the moves UW had made recently suggest they are moving on without him.

Meador

Over the last week, Wisconsin has extended new 2012 scholarship offers to three-star tackle Jake Meador and two-star in-state tackle Levon Myers. Committing to Ole Miss in June over offers from in-state Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville and interest from Notre Dame, Meador had some connection with the UW staff, who he met on a visit to Madison in late February, but the Badgers never came through with an offer. The Rebels, and offensive line coach Mike Markuson, did.

"Coach Markuson said he did not know if he was going to be able to pull me away from Indiana with me being an Indiana boy," Meador said at the time. "So he was really happy to hear the news."

Times have changed. After it was announced that Houston Nutt would not return next season, Meador opened his recruitment again, getting quick offers from Missouri, SMU and Florida. Once UW hired Markuson, however, the Badgers quickly extended a scholarship to Meador and he will visit UW officially this weekend. Meador plans to announce on signing day between UW, Florida and Missouri, and UW should feel good about its chance.

Myers

Myers was regarded by many recruiting analysts as the top lineman in the state, but the Badgers had their sights set on bigger players in the recruiting class. Although Myers got visits from the UW staff and attended the school's junior day and high school camp, it was apparent no full scholarship offer was going to come, resulting in Myers committing to Northern Illinois in October. That changed on Sunday.

Being told a scholarship opened up because of Peter Konz's decision to head to the NFL, UW coach Bret Bielema wanted to bring in another in-state player. The 6-6, 265-pound Myers is a versatile recruit which comes from the teachings of former UW offensive line coach Bob Bostad, who originally suggested that Myers, a long time defensive lineman, switch to the offensive side of the ball. Having been in contact with new assistant coach Ben Strickland, Myers will take an official visit to UW this weekend and plans to commit on signing day.

(Editor's Note: After posting this story, Myers notified Scout.com that he is honoring his original commitment to Northern Illinois)

Diamond

The creme dela crème for Wisconsin would be a verbal commitment from five-star tackle Jordan Diamond, one of the best uncommitted linemen on the market. Having well over 30 offers, Diamond is deciding between Arkansas, Auburn, Michigan and Wisconsin, which he will visit officially this weekend. Diamond was considering Ohio State, but has reportedly dropped the Buckeyes from the running.

A high school All-American, Diamond went to Wisconsin for the Nebraska game this past season, the Northwestern game the season before and made a trip up during the summer to talk to the coaches. A real student of the game, Diamond admits to having taped college football games from team's that have shown him interest, studying the moves and the blocking patterns of that team's offensive line. It's one of the main reasons UW has been in the race.

"I know I could fit in well with Wisconsin," Diamond told Badger Nation previously. "I could see myself playing at any school in the Big Ten. I love the way they play. I am really excited about the whole film thing. It lets me know what I am getting into and get a sort of jump on learning the offense."

Many thing Michigan has been the front runner throughout but getting Diamond on campus this weekend before his expected February 3 decision is big for the Badgers. Diamond has already met Markuson, saying he was a ‘straight-forward, family guy,' and UW is close to his home in Chicago. Many are counting UW out, but the Badgers have as good of a shot as anybody.

Roberts

Set to join the Badgers' traditionally solid walk-on program, 6-4, 290-pounder Gabe Roberts was thrown a curveball when former UW coaches Paul Chryst and Bostad offered him a full scholarship and brought him to Pittsburgh for an official visit. "He's been recruited by Wisconsin, but more by Bostad," New London coach Scott Eggart told Scout.com. "It's been a whirlwind for the young man. He wasn't on the radar, and (the Pitt offer) happened in a span of four or five days."

Eggart said Roberts ‘was blown away' by the visit and the offer, putting UW in a tight spot. If the Badgers want Roberts, it will likely take a scholarship offer, which is limited this recruiting cycle. If UW doesn't offer, Roberts likely will go to Pittsburgh. If UW strikes out on both Meador and Dodson, Roberts could wind up getting an offer and staying home.
