Smith Has Two More Jr. Days

FOX Sports Next is in the streets bringing you all of the coverage. We caught up with Dulles athlete Maurice Smith to see what is going on. He has not pulled in any new offers as of late, but is about to make a trip where one could add to the list…

For Sugar Land (TX) Dulles defensive back Maurice Smith, all of this recruiting attention is a bit of a surprise. But clearly it is one that he is taking in every minute.

"Recruiting is just crazy right now. I didn't think I would be where I am right now," Smith said. "A couple of years ago, I didn't even think I would have the size. Now I have five offers."

Sure enough. The coaching staffs at Utah, Texas Tech, Baylor, LSU and Texas A&M thought that it was a good idea to get in the sweepstakes for the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Smith. So far, he has traveled to Waco and College Station, both in Lone Star State and Baton Rouge in Louisiana.

So where is the next stop?

"This Friday, I am going to Nebraska. I missed the first junior day and now me and my mom are going down there," Smith said. "It seems like the coaches are really trying to get me down there for a visit."

The growing trend so far is that Smith usually walks away from campuses with an offer, and the same could happen once in Lincoln. After that trip, he heads to Austin for the Texas junior day and it seems as though that will be the finale as far as trips.

"I am running track for school so I will be busy," Smith said.

Most of the programs mentioned are looking for Smith to be a cornerback after recording 63 tackles and three interceptions. But Michigan State, according to Smith is recruiting him as an athlete, with the option of cornerback or wide receiver. Offensively, he scored 13 touchdowns last season.

Ahmard Vital is responsible for Midlands Recruiting, mainly covering prospects in the state of Texas. He joined in 2005 and is the author of the newly released book, Awaken the Baller Within.
