Smart Secures Tulane Offer

The Tulane Green Wave was first to offer Scotlandville defensive tackle Tanzel Smart...

Tanzel Smart reeled in his first offer today from Tulane.

"Coach (Jason) Rollins told me he had been at our school watching a linebacker last season," Smart recalled. "He was at a couple of our practices and said he remembered me.

"He said they wanted to offer, and told me I'm the number one defensive tackle in the state. I said, 'I hope so,' and he said, 'You are the best defensive tackle in the state.'"

What else did Rollins say?

"He told me great people come from Tulane," said Smart. "He talked about me making a 25 on the ACT.

"It feels good to get this first offer. I'm been waiting for it for awhile."

Which other schools are in the picture?

"Houston's wide receivers coach has been hitting me up on Facebook," said Smart. "He invited me to their Junior Day on the 31st. He said the coaches are excited about meeting my family and me. He said the defensive staff is pleased that I'm coming to the Junior Day.

"UL asked (teammates) Larry Clark and La'Allan Clark about me last week. They went to a UL practice on the way home from the basketball state championship. I'm going to their Junior Day on the 24th."

Smart, 6-foot-2 and 275 pounds, played on Scotlandville's Class 5A state title hoops team. He spearheaded the Hornets to their best gridiron season years in 2011 and was named First-Team All-Defense on Fox Sports/'s U.S. Army Junior Combine squad.
