Butler enjoyed a solid prep career at Southern Lab High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and headed west to continue his football career when he figured out he wasn't going to qualify.
"I just wanted to get away and head out of the state, so I signed with Citrus," Butler told JCFootball.com. "But when my mom started having problems financially, I came back home and got a job to help her out.
"I took that year off and redshirted, but then when she got on her feet more, I decided to stay closer to home and that's when I came here to Itawamba.
"They have a great program here and they have a great reputation with getting guys ready for the next level."
With his outstanding size and speed (4.6) combination, Butler has already garnered attention from several schools and has four early offers.
"I have offers from Mississippi State, Kentucky, New Mexico and Arkansas State right now," Butler said. "Almost everyone likes me at middle linebacker, but some like me at defensive end too."
Butler is on pace to graduate in December and he will have two years to play two wherever he ends up.
