Recruiting Heating Up for Newman

FOX Sports Next is in the streets bringing you all of the coverage. We caught up with Houston area defensive back Zachry Newman, who plays for Marshall High School in Missouri City, Texas. He has his first offer in hand and is expecting more. Find out the latest in this Fox Sports Next update.

All it takes is one offer to get things going. That is exactly what Missouri City (TX) Marshall defensive back Zachry Newman is experiencing right now. This past weekend he was named the MVP at the Next Level Athlete Combine. Soon after, he was offered his first scholarship.

Now understand that the MVP honors was not a direct correlation to the offer that came Sunday night, but does show signs that Newman is gaining more attention in a hurry.

"I got an offer from North Texas just after I got home from the (NLA) combine. This week things have really picked up for me," Newman said. "The first (offer), it feels good. It's like you got over the hump. A lot of coaches have started contacting me now."

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound Newman has indeed seen a positive momentum swing in his recruitment. In fact, he was just on a call before the interview for this feature. He stated that the coaches from San Jose State were talking with him. And in the past week, Big 12 Conference schools Baylor, West Virginia and Kansas State have all made contact.

And seems like more are coming by the day.

"I talked with the Utah (assistant) coach Morgan Scalley. They have a lot of interest in me too," Newman said.

Newman, who played on both sides of the ball last season, is mainly being recruited as a cornerback or a safety, for the programs that run Cover 2.

"They (college coaches) like my 6-foot-2 body frame. They like that I could play some man or the safety spot in the two-deep zone," Newman, who has made stops to a number of programs including Oklahoma, LSU, Kansas State and North Texas said.

Last season, Newman had 30 tackles and three pass break-ups. Offensively, he had eight catches for 115 yards.
