There is no doubt the Eagles are looking locally for players in the class of 2013, and why not? There is a lot of talented players close to home who are very interested in Southern Miss.
One is FCAHS stand-out Stacey Garner. A multi position player, Garner is working hard to earn that first offer. He talked about some of the things that he enjoyed about Southern Miss at junior day.
"I loved the way they ran their scrimmage and the way they motivated each other on the field," he said. "There was great energy and competitiveness that I really liked a lot."
Garner also enjoyed his opportunity to meet the new coaching staff.
"They do a really good job with their players," he said. "They keep them motivated and are strong on fundamentals. They always make sure they are doing the right thing."
Garner said that he hears regularly from Southern Miss, but he has not been extended an offer yet. He feels one is coming soon though.
His decision will come down to where he feels most comfortable. "I'm looking for somewhere I can feel at home, someplace I know where teammates and coaches have my back, and where I can go in and get a good education," he added.
Being a versatile player, he said the coaches are not yet sure where they'd project him at the next level. He can play wide receiver, outside linebacker, defensive end, and also some safety.
For now, he's working on running track to improve his speed and stay in shape for football. He's planning on attending the spring game at Southern Miss on the 14th, and he'll be heading up to Ole Miss for a junior day the weekend after that.
We'll continue to have updates and information as the Eagles look to land their first commitment of the 2013 class.
