Maclean High On Spartans

This past week was a busy one for (MI) Grand Blanc Community linebacker Luke Maclean as he visited Michigan State and took part in the Adidas Invitational. Spartan Digest spoke with Maclean about his interest in MSU.

Saturday was a day for Grand Blanc (Mich.) junior linebacker Luke Maclean to prove he's got the ability to move from his linebacker position to defensive end.

One program keeping a close eye on Maclean progress is Michigan State, a program the 6-foot-3, 235-pounder is very high on.

"I visited Michigan State for a practice this past Tuesday," said Maclean. "They really looked great and they are going to have a really good team this year.

"It's a school I'm definitely interested in and I love the coaching staff there as Coach (Pat) Narduzzi is a great coach who is high energy and brings a lot of great things to the table. He's also a great defensive coordinator."

While Maclean is high on Narduzzi, he is even higher for Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio.

"Coach Dantonio, he's the type of head coach you want to lead you," said Maclean. "He's got good virtues and all of that. He wants a certain type of kid with a certain type of charter on his team and that is something I believe in."

For Luke Maclean the Adidas Invitational was sort of like a coming out party. While listed as an outside linebacker, Maclean has seen several teams including Michigan State talk with him about becoming a defensive end in college.

"Michigan State wants me as a defensive end," explained Maclean. "I'm planning on camping there this summer as they are a straight 4-3 defensive team so they like those defensive ends that can pass rush."

Saturday, Maclean looked to show his abilities by battling several top offensive linemen in one-on-one drills.

How did he feel about his performance after the day had ended?

"It was great," said Maclean. "It was the first time I've ever come to a competition camp as a defensive end. So I got a lot of good reps (One-on-One) against some offensive linemen. There was a lot of good competition; good energy and they always throw great camps here at Max-X."

Early in the process the Grand Blanc (MI) Community product has picked up there offers.

"I have offers from Cincinnati, Western Michigan, Central Michigan and the University of Buffalo," said Maclean. "Recruiting wise it's early in the season and I'm hearing from a lot of schools, so you've just got to take your time and figure out what place is best for you."

With Michigan State being a school of high interest for Maclean, an offer from the Spartans could speed up his recruitment. Spartan Digest will continue to follow Maclean as the waiting game unfolds.
