Calvin Allen, a defensive end from La Cueva HS in Albuquerque (NM), picked up an offer from San Diego State on Tuesday.
"I was really excited about the offer," Allen said. "I was hoping they [SDSU] would recruit me, so I was excited. I like San Diego."
Safeties coach Danny Gonzales has been recruiting Allen since he was coaching at the University of New Mexico.
"I like the coaching staff as I knew them while they were at New Mexico," Allen said. "He [coach Gonzales] talked to me about how he's from here and really looking forward to me becoming an Aztec."
The two-way player, also plays tight end, hopes to make it out to San Diego State for the team camp in June with no other visits planned at the moment.
The 6-foot-6 and 235 pound rush end also holds offers from Arizona and New Mexico. While he doesn't have a favorite, he does consider SDSU as one of the top teams for his services.
Allen doesn't have a timetable on when he would like to make his college decision but is considering committing to a school before the start of his high school season.
As for his game on the field, Allen has always played with his hand in the dirt as a defensive end but this upcoming season will be his first year playing as a stand-up outside rush linebacker.
"I fit into just about anything. We run a 4-4 in high school but we are switching into a 3-5 next year," Allen said. "I think I'm going to be able to transition really well and be able to play that position [outside rush linebacker]."
Last season at La Cueva HS, Allen had 15 sacks in limited opportunities as most teams ran plays away from his side of the field. He credits his quickness and good hands to his season sack total.
Expectations for Allen as a team have always been to be state champions, but he has set the bar even higher for himself.
"To be the top defensive end in the state and maybe one of the top tight ends as well," Allen said.
Allen feels like he needs to work hard all summer and make sure he comes in as strong as ever to take that next step forward in his development as a football player.
He is on the right track.
