Clemson offers North Carolina DE

Earlier this month, Clemson offered this defensive end from North Carolina, who is also a teammate of one of the top prospects in the state.

DE Devante Covington Profile

The Tigers' offer went to rising senior Devante Covington, who registered eight sacks as a junior last fall.

"That was a surprise. I didn't know they had interest," Covington said in a recent interview with CUTigers It's an offer he was happy to add to his list.

"They have a good football program," he said.

South Carolina, Tennessee, Wake Forest, N.C. State and East Carolina have also offered Covington.

This spring, he visited ECU and N.C. State.

"Hopefully, I'll end up going to Tennessee. I'm supposed to be going to Clemson in May, also. And, North Carolina - Chapel Hill," Covington said.

Currently, he claims no favorite. The school that adds Covington's commitment will be where he "feels most comfortable and at home."

What's his timetable for a decision?

"Probably in August."

At last weekend's Shrine Bowl combine in Asheville, Covington checked in at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds. He ran a 4.65 40-yard dash and a 4.26 in the 20-yard shuttle. He also had a 29-inch vertical and bench pressed 185 pounds 11 times.

Clemson defensive line coach Dan Brooks checked in on Covington and four-star offensive lineman Tyrone Crowder at Richmond County High School last Thursday.
