Ogbonnia Okoronkwo talks Wake Forest
"The defensive line coach, Coach Mac, is the one I talked to," said Ogbonnia Okoronkwo. "He said they like my speed and my ability to redirect. I know [Wake Forest] is a good academic school. They have a pharmaceutical program which is my intended major. I'm going to take a visit over the summer or right after spring football."
Okoronkwo had his first year on Alief Taylor's varsity squad. He was named First Team All-District (Texas 18-5A) at defensive tackle. His Lions' team went 7-5 and to the 2nd round of the 5A Division II Playoffs.
"It was a good season," Okoronkwo said. "I got used to the speed and ability of the players on the varsity level. The coaches lined me up a different spots on the line all season.
"I had 50 tackles, 11 sacks, and 13 tackles for loss. I got better with my hand work and being physical at the point of attack. My best game was probably against Langham Creek in the first round of the playoffs. I had five sacks."
Okoronkwo's other offers are from SMU and Texas Tech. So far, he has only made one visit this spring to a Junior Day event at SMU.
"I'm probably going to commit at the end of the school year or early summer," said Okoronkwo. "My biggest issue is finding a school that has my major. Playing out of state would be fine with me. I just want to find the best all-around program for me.
"I'm hoping to have a better season than I had this year. The main thing is for me to keep advancing. I don't want to backtrack."
Spring practice has been going on at Alief Taylor for two weeks. Okoronkwo said there has been "quite a few" college coaches stop by to see practice.
He reports Purdue is currently expressing the most interest from the schools who have not yet offered. Okoronkwo wears No. 71 for the Roaring Lions.
