The Latest on Dontre Wilson

DeSoto head football coach Claude Mathis explains where his 4-star running back sits in recruitment as he nears commitment announcement…

It is no surprise Dontre Wilson, a 5'10, 180-pound burner of a running back out of DeSoto (TX), has nearly the entire country hanging onto every bit of news that comes of him.

It's what happens when you're ranked one of the best ten 'backs in the country, and have college football powers in a sprint for you.

As DeSoto head football coach Claude Mathis explained to FSNext's Ahmard Vital last month, it is the multiple duties Wilson can perform on the football field that has these programs chasing.

"The coaches say he can play anywhere. Some like him as a defensive back, others like him as a running back and he can also return kicks," Mathis said. "He is the whole package, an all-purpose back. And the great thing is he can run between that tackles too."

With reports circulating that Wilson is down to Oregon and Ohio State, Mathis was quick to correct.

"I know for a fact there are more than just Oregon and Ohio State," declared Mathis. "It's not just those two. He's still open."

"I know Oregon and Ohio State know they're in it. In fact, he was on the phone with Ohio State this morning. They knew they were always one of the choices since Urban took over."

"But he hasn't narrowed down to any final schools. He's still open."

Mathis noted that Wilson has visited Oregon, Texas A&M, Texas, and Oklahoma State.

"He's done with visits. If he went anywhere else, it'd be Ohio State. But as of now, he doesn't have any more visits planned."

Wilson will be competing in the State 4x100 and 4x200-meter relays this weekend in Austin, Texas.

"We're going to sit down after State to talk things over," said Mathis. "And he'll narrow down and probably make his decision during the spring game (May 25)."
