SEC schools battling for Walker Jones

Walker Jones, three-star linebacker from Cordova-Evangelical Christian School, Tenn., is one of the top prospects in the Volunteer State. Several schools are recruiting the elite prospect who has two brothers who play football for the University of Alabama. The youngest brother is very open to all schools.

"Arkansas came by the school today," said Walker Jones. "He was actually apologetic. Coach Horton was feeling bad. It was a kind of funny.

"He said he is going to start really recruiting me. He didn't offer yet, but said they probably would. Arkansas said today they didn't recruit me at first because they thought I was going to Alabama. I think people believe I really don't know at this time."

The Jones family are well known at the University of Alabama. Barrett Jones was the 2011 Outland Trophy winner, and Harrison Jones saw playing time for the 2011 BCS National Champions. Their father, Rex Jones, also played basketball for Alabama.

"I'm not going to do whatever my brothers do," said the youngest member of the Jones family. "I am going to be my own person. I am not going to go to Alabama just because of them. I want to go somewhere that really needs me and wants me. If I already knew I was going to Alabama I would have already committed."

Alabama has offered a scholarship, but Jones is not considered a lock to end up in Tuscaloosa.

"I wouldn't place them ahead of anyone right now," said Jones of the Tide. "I am trying to look at everyone equally. Obviously they have advantages others don't have. I have been talking to coach Groh a ton though.

"He is trying to find out what I am looking for in a school. He is telling me how Alabama can provide that for me. I pretty much know everything about the program. The one thing he can really talk to me about is how well I fit I there.

"When Coach Saban offered me he told me they wanted me to come to camp to see which position they like me better. I've never played offense at their camp. I assume that's what they want. I will probably go to the July camp."

Alabama, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, Arkansas and Tennessee have visited Jones this spring. He is expecting Ohio State to also visit.

"A few schools like Arizona State, Virginia, Wake Forest are new schools showing interest in me," Jones said. "The main four I have visited--Mississippi State, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Alabama are recruiting me the hardest. Arkansas said they will start recruiting me hard."

Jones hopes to make a decision this summer, and his calendar already appears a busy one.

"I am trying to figure out my schedule for the summer," he said. "This is really like my last summer. I am going to take a few vacations, and I don't want to miss a work-out with my team."
