First Offer Brings Johnson to Tears

Cretin-Derham Hall (Minn.) sophomore quarterback Ricardo Johnson received good news yesterday, news of his first scholarship offer.

A special moment for the Johnson family happened yesterday as Ricardo Johnson earned his first scholarship offer, one that has been a long time in the making even though he is only a sophomore.

"I found out shortly after school," he said. "My dad pulled me out of the car and he said that Hawaii just offered me. We started crying. After all the blood, sweat and tears, and hard work of getting me recruited, to get the first offer was a dream come true."

The 5'11, 160-lb Johnson had some help from a contact who got the film to the Warriors.

"Coach Norm Chow saw the film and from that, he just said that he saw my intangibles, technique, my three-step, five-step were all solid and they wanted to be the first to jump and offer me."

Then Johnson had a chance to speak with one of the coaches.

"I got to talk to Coach Demarest. He said they wanted to see me come out for camp in Hawaii, which we're going to be down there for and I'm looking forward to seeing it."

Johnson's other camp stops will be California, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Michigan, Miami (FL) and LSU.

He will have some time to get himself mentally prepared for those, but he admits concentrating on other tasks for the rest of Tuesday was hard.

"I just got out of a choir concert and I was forgetting words to songs. Surreal is how it feels. All the years of hard work I put into it is unfolding in front of our eyes. It's a blessing."
