Chequan Burkett talks offers

Chequan Burkett, safety from Jeff Davis High School in Montgomery, Ala., is a sleeper prospect who is really emerging this spring. Several schools are taking a closer look with scholarship offers now in hand. Burkett talked about the latest news and plans for the summer.

"I have received offers from Memphis and Vanderbilt," said Chequan Burkett. "I am waiting on one from Arkansas State and maybe one from Georgia Tech. I received the offer from Memphis and Vanderbilt last week. They like what they had seen.

"Some schools are saying linebacker and some are saying safety. Memphis and Vanderbilt are saying they are recruiting me as a safety."

Burkett talked about reeling in his first SEC offer.

"It was great," he said of the Commodores. "It was huge for me. They are one of the highest academics schools in the country. It blew me away. They also have a good program.

"I spoke with coach George Barlow. He came to my school to see me. He told me he liked my film. He liked the way I played and my grades."

Memphis was the first school to pull the trigger which is always the one to remember.

"It was nice to get the offer from Memphis," Burkett said. "It was my first offer. I was really excited to hear about it. I have been speaking with coach Wiggins."

The 6-foot-2, 208-pound athlete plans to attend camps at Auburn, LSU, Memphis and Tennessee.

Burkett had 52 tackles in 2011, two interceptions and six forced fumbles.

"I would say my strengths are breaking on the ball, coverage skills and tackling," he said. "I am trying to work on my footwork, speed, agility and hips."
